I'm completely new to FamiTracker, although I'm certainly not new to music or the NES.
Ever since I was a little 5-year-old kid with my first NES games back in 1988, I've been crazy about 8-bit music.
I've been playing and producing music professionally for the past 11 years, but I've never used any trackers before...only MIDI sequencers, DAWs, and things like that, so needless to say this is completely new territory for me.
My favorite NES composers are Tim and Geoff Follin.
Here are my first NSFs (both original compositions)!
I welcome your feedback, constructive criticism, etc. I can't tell you how excited I am to finally get a chance to make legitimate NES music, and I want to get better at it!
EDIT: Attached .ftm s. Is that required?

Thanks Mex! Yeah, I used some pretty standard stuff...mostly just trying to get a feel for how all the commands work and stuff.
I have some pretty ambitious goals as far as the types of things I'd like to do, but best to start simple I guess.

Just a couple things I thought about the songs though:
1.Afro beat theme. When it started I was like "OH MY GOD HE JUST STARTED HERE BUT ALREADY KNOWS ABOUT CIRNOSIS?"
2.running. The part where it goes to loop was kinda... eh. Like, in my opinion, the tom fill shouldn't be there.
@gyms I appreciate you following my videos! It's nice to be recognized
Some of the modern chiptune/MOD stuff just blows my mind with its complexity...I'm kind of more into the "classic" style of NES composition though.
About MML: I have experience with it, writing tunes for Super Mario World hacks. I hate the process of composing or porting music via text! So, as tempting as N106 is (I love soundtracks like King of Kings), I can wait until someday when FT supports it
@kinkinkijkin
1. WTH is Cirnosis?
2. After listening again (I just made that tune this morning) I completely agree with you...the end of the loop is kind of jarring, as it's basically a 2-bar drum break back into an intro. It would be better if it had been a 1-bar drum break back into the 1st melodic section. I kinda like my Mega Man tom fill though
Thanks so much for the kind welcome you guys. Looking forward to learning more from you.
Peace!

These sound pretty good! I agree with what Mex said about the chord progression, but really, quite nice. Don't mind kinkinkijkin, "cirnosis" is a pretty stupid "fad" of sorts started by a member who's since been banned.
Off the main topic, do you still work with MIDI? I recently acquired a Roland SC-55 and wanted to write with it, but know little to nothing about MIDI sequencers, so I was hoping you might be able to shed some light on the subject of which I could use, etc.
@danooct1 - I'm glad to see you in this thread, so I can thank you! Your tutorials are the main reason I've made it this far. Lord knows I couldn't have figured that stuff out from the spotty FT documentation.
I work with MIDI daily! The SC-55 is a great all-around unit. DAW/Sequencer software is really a matter of preference, but I prefer Cubase after having used most of the other major ones over the years. I suppose it comes down to price range as well...what all kinds of features are you looking for? Just basic sequencing? You can PM me if you don't feel like putting it all out in the thread.
@XERO - thanks very much! I'm already working on some more!
FamiTracker is kind of addictive, now that I kinda know what I'm doing with it. The nature of creating music in this way has naturally changed the way I go about composing. I come from a jazz background, so my approach is usually more improvisational, and then I refine the ideas from there - but just the technical reality of using a tracker forces me to be a bit more calculated in exactly what it is I'm trying to "say" in a tune.
Expect some more complex pieces soon!
Thanks again, guys.

To pretty much sum up cirnosis in one scentence: Take the melody of a song, replace it with the melody from cirno's theme. There's even a still-active thread for it on the forums.
And, I say that I was thinking you knew about cirnosis because the first 4 rows use the same sequence (if not notes) as the same from cirno's theme.
Speaking of VirtuaNSF, I use the following channel volumes, which result in near-hardware accuracy and a max output of -0.5 dB (expansion channels excluded):
each square 162
triangle 179
noise 175
dpcm 149
And for a smoother square sound, try the option "reset value of $4017 is $40".
Wow, cool! How did you figure these settings?
Using Adobe Audition analysis tools and my ears, I compared the mp3s posted HERE to wave files exported from VirtuaNSF and adjusted things accordingly. I think a better calibration might be achieved using a simple reference NSF (with test tones and such), but I did my best.
BTW, I dig these songs. Nice 7/8 feel on the 2nd track of "Running".
