So, what we have here is pretty much my redoing the MMX3 ost with MMC5. It's been interesting so far honestly. Some instances of me just hating the soundtrack due to some stupid timing in some of the songs, others my own idiotic approach at covering a song as accurately as possible (see the title theme in the FTM to get a taste of what I mean). I'm almost halfway done now due to getting the more minor themes out of the way before getting to the main stages. So yeah, this is it so far. I'm open to any and all critique. Thanks.
Looks like you've used up all your DPCM spaces, but maybe there's some way you can fill in that unique percussion sound in Gravity Beetle. Without it, the 2nd SQ1 and SQ2 sound odd (to me anyway).
Dang, dude, sounds awesome so far. It's just a shame I've never really been a fan of the X3 boss music. It just seems so... Bland. Personally speaking, of course. And that doesn't mean you didn't do a good job of capturing it. It's just... That song... Haha, the rest are pretty awesome, though.
Something does sound a bit off about the victory theme, though... It almost sounds like it's too high or something like that, but after playing around with it, it seems like that's pretty much where it has to be. Putting it down an octave makes it too low. Weeeird. But whatever.

I'm not sure what you mean by "unique percussion".

Nice job. You think you're gonna do more?[/quote]
I agree with the boss music. I tried to make it sound foreboding by using retrigs, but the song is pretty boring still. I don't get why the victory theme sounds like that. I agree that it sounds off, but it doesn't seem to want to be fixed.
And yes, I'm gonna try and do the whole OST.

You know, it's that "whup whup - whup whup - whup" or "whur whur" sound near the beginning and at the end. I'll try to isolate it...
... Huh. Actually I guess it's not a unique sound exactly. It's an emergent sound coming from the noisy parts of two of the low distortion guitars (mostly channel 7 in JCOM-SPC, but I think channel 3 also contributes to the effect.) What I'm talking about happens around 13 or 14 seconds into the original song, and then again in the final measure. I always assumed it was an extra sound added for texture or something, and I strongly associated it with that song. My ears are always learning...
Oh I got it now. It sounds like it's those two grunge choirs plus the bass channel all aid to that. Unfortunately, the heavy sound isn't there anymore in my cover, instead, just normal backup guitar choirs in square 3 and 4. The triangle channel is the same though and it still has that neat sound to it at the time you mentioned (13-14 seconds).
Alright. All the minor themes are finished. All I really have to do now is the main stage themes.
Also, take a listen to the NSF. There is a problem with Cain's Lab. At the part where it supposed to loop, it completely freaks out. That would be song 21 on NSF players that start at 0.
This is being done with FT 0.3.7b
Edit: Okay, my bad. I figured out the problem and removed the NSF as an attachment. I accidentally put B03 in the ftm at the end of that song instead of B02. I was counting frame 0 as 1... yeah. Anyway, it fixed the NSF, but the ftm looped properly lol. I guess ftm's loop from the last frame even if you put a higher number. Going to update the first post with that fix plus I touched up some stuff.
Still sounding good, man. Though, out of curiosity, have you tried making use of the actual drum samples from X3, instead of the rather large assortment of other drum samples you've got in there? I'm thinking of possibly trying that out myself, see if the X3 samples even sound decent in DPCM. Though if you've already tried them, and found that they didn't work out well, then hey, more power to you.

X2 and X3 use the same samples but mostly at a different pitch. I have X2 kick and snare plus some of the other ones I'm using sound almost exactly like the ones pitch altered for X3, even the toms so it's dandy. I just thought I'd mix it up by using more drums for variety sake. Also, those Shinobi III toms I'm using are too good
Except th only thing i dont like is that almost every song you did does like the same exact type of static-noise or something on the Noise channel, it's like hardly ever different on any song. That's the only thing that really bugs me in my opinion.
It doesn't feel right like that. It's hard to explain in words, sorry.
Not trying to be mean or anything, wouldn't want to give the wrong impression.
I like the zero theme on the rockman DEM rom hack just a tinny little bit more in comparison
Well, the reason I have basically the same thing in the noise channel for every song is because X3 has the exact same cymbal crashes all over the place. I am learning slowly with each song I cover what kind of laziness they manage with this game. I call this game MegaGrunge X3 for a reason =P
