Ok, I'm trying to improve my drum sounds with DPCM sampling. When I import sample it sounds like crap. I dont understand what the problem is so I would be so grateful if someone would tell where I am messing up. This is what I've done step by step:

1)Found a drum sample online and created one using Guitar Pro 6
2) open FT and click on new instrument and click for the editor
3) click dpcm samples, click load sample and opened the sample I saved on desktop bassdrum6
4) clicked the left arrow while key/pitch/sample is highlighted on C 15 bassdrum5.wav
5) repeat for second sample
6) preview sound and use with FT
7) post on message board my frustration

Any help?

Wow that sounds weird. Does it even sound that bad with "preview sample"? If not, I suggest tinkering with it until the volume and quality of the sample sound equally good. It could also be your wav file is at a bad frequency/bit rate, maybe.

You're not supposed to click on Load if you're using a WAV file; click on Import instead.

There are two file types that can be used as samples; DMC files & WAV files. For a WAV file to work, you have to keep it small (if it exceeds 4081 KB in size, you're screwed; FamiTracker will load it as a 4081 KB sample & you won't be able to use more than one sample in the same project in a proper manner).

Luckily, there are NES sample packs available for download across this forum & other NES-related forums (all in DMC format).

Now, there's a downside with DPCM; no matter what sample you use, you will never be able to create one that sounds crystal clear (you can try this with voice recordings).

They're great for percussion, though. Because they don't always sound as clear as you'd like, one way to make it sound better would be to use the noise channel with the sample at the same time.

You can see this in my music, where I use the noise channel to augment the sound of a snare drum beat.

lol I had no idea wav files could be used like that. I always thought you had to convert them to dmc first.

I have Roland U-110 drums that I ripped from the sound module that I use as DPCM drums if you would like those.

Well, considering that most DMC converters are capable of properly converting samples based on that 16x+1 KB equation that rainwarrior pointed out, it's actually best to do a DMC conversion; if the WAV file has too much information, it will play only a small bit of the sample while wasting space that can be used for more samples.

No problem. If you need any other kind of percussion I can rip that from the U-110 too. It's actually one of the sound modules David Wise used for his SNES music like Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and Donkey Kong Country.

I'd be interested in having those actually, if you have them handy.
