Think of this as an experiment. How much music can you actually memorize, and how accurate is that memory in your head? I've been tracking a bunch of old tunes (mostly Final Fantasy and Earthbound) for the last few months and put them all (or at least the ones that are mostly finished) in one FTM to share in this thread.
These tracks aren't necessarily very accurate, but that's kind of the point. If you want to make corrections to them, I'll ask that you also only do it from memory. Also, please excuse the crappy instrumentation. Some of these were written when I had just started using FamiTracker (not to mention the instrumentation is not really the point, it's about remembering notes.)
I'd love to hear what other people are able to pull out of their heads if they feel like sharing. Try to pick something that you haven't played or heard in at least a year.
This idea is pretty badass. I recognise a few of these songs, but my memory is too convoluted with Megaman X music that I can't say whether or not they are really accurate.
Dude, have you tried any Megaman X songs from memory? I tried a couple, and the opening level from X3 but didn't make it more than a few measures. I thought I knew those songs by heart, but apparently not. It's a humbling experience.

Funny you mention X3. I'm currently working on an intro stage cover for that game. But actually, no, I haven't tried to cover anything by memory. I'm pretty, PRETTY sure I can do some really acurrate covers from the X series, especially X3s 8 boss stages since they seem oh so very simple. I'm not gonna go into the soundtrack though. I'm sure no one wants some tl;dr voyage of me breaking the soundtrack down x_x
Well it was coming along for a while, anyway! Those Soyo Oka progressions are a little hard to remember off the top of my head 5-some years after first covering the piece.

Another try! This time slightly more successful. Didn't even attempt to do the percussion, couldn't remember that at all. Some of the harmonies still managed to trip me up too...

This is my go at it. Took me about 5 minutes, but the volume envelopes, speed and the last frame are probably completely wrong. It's also a pretty simple tune to cover. I might try something more difficult eventually.
EDIT: Changed the speed to 8, sounds much more faithful to Koji's rendition that way.
EDIT2: Made some more minor changes... There might still be some note-off's missing though.
