Hi, I'm new here. Well, I've used Famitracker before, but I mostly use FL Studio, however I has a NES VST by Matt Montag that pretty much lets you create 8-bit instruments just like in Famitracker.
I've been making music for a year now. I'm pretty good for my level, I guess, but my style is more upbeat and melodic. It doesn't sound very videogamey, and I want my music to sound like it's from an NES game!
I preferably want to learn the Megaman style! I'm real good at coming up with solid melodies, but not too good with the background stuff. It's something I have to work on. I'm really good at percussion.
I've tried making a Megaman styled tune, but It doesn't sound megamanish at all to me. I guess I'm not using the right instruments or something. I've looked on this site here, and found a bunch of megaman instruments, but I just don't really know how to go about using them.
For the longest time I've been using the same NES sound font, and just now about 3 days ago, started using this VST. I rather work in FL Studio with this VST since drawing notes on the piano roll is a lot easier for me than using a tracker.
I've remade part of Plug Man's stage in FL studio with this VST, from copying the instruments and such from the .ftp I found, and it sounds the same as in Famitracker, so I know this VST can get the job done.
If you want the VST, here it is.

Anywho, could somebody give tips and such, or help teach me, please? I have so many good melodies in my head, and they would sound so great if they were made into Megaman tunes!

You'll notice that his instruments uses pitch bending effects. You'll also note the exclusive use of the noise channel as percussion (without the use of percussion samples in the DPCM channel). I know there are plenty of other things that I'm missing here in terms of theory, so I'll leave it to the other guys to explain deeper (& leave you to study the link I posted here).

best thing to do is download nsf's. isolate each channel. listen. learn. also watch examples people have made in FT. that helped me out a lot to see how to get certain sounds. i attached some i found a while back that you may find useful. is there a certain game that has more of a sound your going for? 2 and 3 are my favorites but they use a lot of different techniques.
