I'm interested in using the FDS channel to try to make an at least halfway-decent tubular bell sound, kinda like what you hear in the ending theme to SMB2j. Any suggestions on how to go about this task?

You know, why don't you just get a sample of a tubular bell and remake the waveform?!?!

Calm down, bud. I'm politely asking for suggestions. You don't need to shout.
Rainwarrior, that's not bad, but the sound I'm looking for will definitely require a custom waveform. I think what I'm going to do is export a .wav of the isolated FDS channel playing the tone I'm trying to imitate and examine it in Audacity.
Further suggestions still welcome, though.

if you want, use nsfplug/nsfplay with smb2, play the song and look in its visualiser, then copy the FDS wave when it appears. you get numbers that are usable in famitracker.
Also, I managed to stumble across this page, which has several FDS waveforms, including a good bell:

EDIT: After taking Dave's advice and finding the magic numbers in nsfplay, I have concluded that the bell found on the page I linked to is the same as what's used in SMB2j. Huzzah.

i've used it in a song before ;J maybe that can be a video demonstration: [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5X4ZTQvWyM]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5X4ZTQvWyM
That was a cool song, Dave, and it shows off well the waveforms of a lot of cool different FDS instruments. Also, wow, nsfplay's keyboard visualizer makes a great thing to look at for a YouTube video of NSF music.
