I haven't finished anything of note lately, so I thought I'd dump some mostly unfinished music as I've seen other people doing here. If you want to criticize or modify an ftm, go for it.

Is it possible that FamiTracker makes the barrier to entry too low? I remember trying to fool around with Mod Plug Tracker years ago, but gave up in frustration. FT has a nice interface, and it's so simple (only 5 tracks without extra modules) that it seems like a perfect place to get started with trackers and writing VG music. These tracks might not be masterpieces, but writing them made me feel good - like some kind of cathartic exercise. Plus hopefully I'm learning.

Gotta be cool, I don't think all of the instruments' attacks needs to be at full volume 15

Sick is fine.

by the docks, I'd like the bass instrument louder, or rather, just 00 having its last volume be ~6

market is fine, liking the melody.

Gotta be cool is really really nice! I enjoyed the style very much, although you need more sawtooth bass. :3

I found sick to be a bit slow to my linking but again, it's a good piece of music. I expected the MMC5 to kick in a bit earlier though, and in my opinion it could be used a bit more extensively than just one channel playing an ostinato for 5 frames.

"By the docks" doesn't feel I'm there at midnight, more like during a fight in an RPG or something. :p Still though, very nice piece of music, albeit a tiny bit short. I think this one deserves to be expanded with a B and maybe even a C section. I very much liked the triangle arp which makes it feel like it's adding to the drums. The effect could be accentuated slightly though. Nice work!

Exotic Market sounds like it's being played on bagpipes, really. Perhaps a snare sample or a better noise instrument would contribute in making this piece better.
I don't think all of the instruments' attacks needs to be at full volume 15
I thought about this. Wouldn't I want to keep the levels as high as possible in the instrument editor? That way I can get the maximum dynamic range by using the volume column in the tracker. Otherwise, an F in the volume column will never actually reach F. (Although maybe I misunderstand how volume control mixes with the volume envelopes.)

In general though, I'm going to suck at figuring volume levels until I buy some new headphones or develop a system for myself. My tinny laptop speakers and ear buds aren't cutting it.
"By the docks" doesn't feel I'm there at midnight, more like during a fight in an RPG or something
Well I was going for something like a cross between Batman and Ninja Gaiden. Though I haven't played either one in ages, so I don't know how close that comparison might be. Regardless, fights can happen at midnight, right?
Exotic Market sounds like it's being played on bagpipes
Haha. I guess I'll try to do better instrumentation.

I was kind of sick of this music, but it sounds like maybe you guys think I should continue it? Maybe I'll work on 'market' and 'midnight' tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback.

(EDIT)

It's still short, but I added a bit to by the docks.

I just noticed you use G-0's and F-0's in that FTM. The lowest note the 2a03 can play is A-0, anything lower will sound like an A-0 as well.

Yeah, I noticed that after I wrote it, but I figured what the hell. Those notes are pretty ghosted anyway, and it didn't seem to affect the song.

That upload was kinda lazy anyway. Here's a slightly different version.

Also, here are a couple other songs I've been working on this week. I'd appreciate any advice on how to continue them. Not really sure if my Monkey Island tune is going the right way.

*crickets chirping for days*

Is it that bad? Don't be shy. I'd rather read two pages of "this is total shit because..." than nothing.

No one? Okay then. Well, not familiar with any of them (assuming they are covers) but they sound fine to me. I especially like the Monkey Island one.

I rather like "By the Docks at Midnight". As jrlepage said earlier, it does sound more like a battle theme, but it's fine.

Oh, Monkey Island is a cover (as indicated by the file name), but the other is some original dickery. I haven't touched it since I posted it, but I'll probably finish the Monkey Island tune later this week. I just wanted to get a little feedback before I put the rest of the work into it (so tedious to transcribe by ear when you can't separate channels!).

You're not familiar with Monkey Island? I highly recommend them. Besides the excellent writing, the soundtrack to the Curse of Monkey Island is one of my favorite game OSTs. And this is coming from a guy who has a few Final Fantasy CDs.

Well I know about Monkey Island and that it's a cover. I just wasn't sure about the others, plus I'm just not familiar with the game in general. But I'll definately check out the OST because if it's anything like the cover here, then it'll be awesome.
