something I've been wondering for a while; why does famitracker sound so nasty with sustained squares?

check ny examples attached -- two 50% square tones with no other characteristics other than falling volume. it sounds really ugly in FT, and as a composer my initial reaction when i hear that is to lower the volume as much as possible to make the effect unpronounced. however i've found that it is not to do with being too loud/distorting. in fact, two squares blaring at volume F sounds fine in nsf players. in the MP3 i've compared famitracker's output with the nsf playing in foo_gep.

is there anything that can be done about this? it isn't a huge problem for me personally because i record my songs with separate nsf players (even the stereo separation in nsf live helps, but it may otherwise have the same problem), but for people who render audio from famitracker, it could be a concern.

The FTM sounds fine on my computer. Could it be related to your sound card?

There was a problem with the square channels interacting improperly with each other causing an unpleasant cross-modulation kind of sound.

I think it was fixed in the latest release though. I don't hear it in the new beta, at least.

aaahhh, so that was the problem. you're right, 0.3.7 is much better (although, there is a slight extra harmonic/overtone/alias artifact in there not present in foo_gep, but not a real concern.) glad to know it's been fixed. JP, i can only assume you were using 0.3.7 to play it?

That's correct; I didn't try any other version. Good to know it's been fixed though.

This was brought up in a thread earlier and I found the cause so it should not be a problem anymore, I forgot to add it to the change log. The updated NSF player you received earlier is also fixed.
