I have a super old laptop and I was wondering what the best os for running FT is. I currently use xp but with only 256 ram it kinda sucks. Does FT run under windows 95?

all i can suggest with a system that old is: try it and see. my guess is that if it works at all, it won't work very well. i agree though, some minimum system requirements would be cool to see.

Chances are the Windows 95 machine's using 256 KB of RAM (which is just barely enough to even run the OS without a kernel panic).

In other words, I can tell you straight off the bat that FamiTracker won't work (at least not well) on that machine.

Also note the CPU specs; chances are it's at most a Pentium 1 & at least a 486.

You guys didn't read properly! He said he was under XP but with 256 RAM (I'm assuming those are MBs, not KBs). The Windows 95 was a different question altogether.

256 MB should be enough to run the program but not without encountering some issues. For one, you're going to need to set the buffer length to ridiculously high values to avoid constant stuttering.

And I really really don't think it would work under Win 95.

Oh; I thought he was referring to the Windows 95 machine concerning RAM.

On an XP machine, 256 MB of RAM is enough to run FamiTracker (or just about any other program as demanding as FamiTracker,) provided that you have a good CPU to run it with (i.e.: Pentium 4 as a minimum).

I've tried FamiTracker & Nessie on an XP unit with 512 MB of RAM & a 700 MHz AMD CPU; needless to say that both programs stalled the system (especially Nessie).

haha, I've already tried that. FT doesn't work in 3.11, 95, 98, or 2000/ME. It says it expects a newer version of Windows.

The bare minimum for even running Windows 95 on a computer is 8MB of RAM, recommended value is 16mb. If you're talking about 256kb, TechEmporium, then we're getting into the MS-DOS era. My Compaq Portable I from 1983 has 128kb of RAM.

Back on topic, no, I don't think it is possible to run Famitracker on Windows 95. As said already, it doesn't work in anything below XP.

I tested the earliest versions on a Pentium 200 MHz with windows 95 and that worked back then, the only part that actually requires CPU power is the audio synth and that has remained more or less the same since the very first version. However windows 9x support was dropped when I switched compiler some time ago, the platform is no longer supported by microsoft so it won't be possible to fix. (Unless someone compiles it with an older version of visual studio, but is anyone really using windows 95/98 anymore?)

Anyway I can add some system requirements if you give me some ideas how well it works on your systems. Does anyone have any problems running on a system less than 10 years old for example?

Here are the units I've tested FamiTracker 0.3.0 on:

IBM R51 laptop
1.6 GHz single-core CPU, 1.5 GB of RAM
Windows XP Pro SP3
SoundMAX audio card & ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics

Generic tower PC
700 MHz AMD single-core CPU, 512 MB of RAM
Windows XP Pro SP2
Unknown sound card & generic graphics card

Which explains why my Windows 95 system blue screens a lot (yes; it's a 486 running the original release of Windows 95 with barely 1.5 MB of RAM & two 1 GB hard drives). The only thing it can run well is Encarta 94. :P
