Could you please give me some more information about that format?, because when I was thinking in adding support for it, I readed that the games stores in their own manner the data. It is true?.

If it is an universal format, it would be trivial to add it.

Is there some sort of tool that allows to rip DAC samples out of a rom or maybe to rip from a VGM file into a WAV file? I thought it was possible somehow with GensKmod, but I'm not sure how to. The way I have been doing it (recording only the PCM channel into a WAV and using Audacity to obtain them) is okay for some samples, but there are always other samples that you can't get, for example, the sample plays, but stops short because another sample is triggered, so only part of the sample can be obtained, so that way is unreliable.

Most games store samples in raw uncompressed 8-bit unsigned mono PCM. So you can just open a ROM with an audio editor as 'raw PCM', and set sample rate to 8000-16000 (~11025). Only few games had compression for samples.

I'm not quite sure what you mean exactly. I tried importing raw Z80 data in Audacity however, and got some interesting results. The waveform looks like it might be DAC samples for some games (like Streets of Rage for example), but they playback very strangely. Other games (for example, Alien Soldier) playback was just clustered and static. This is very interesting. If you don't mind, could you give some sort of example of what you mean?

You need to open your BIN/SMD file (unzipped!) with an audio editor as RAW unsigned PCM 8-bit mono. I have no idea how to do this in Audacity, it is not really designed as an audio editor, it is more like a multitrack recorder with some editing capabilities. So use some other editor, if you need a free one, get Wavosaur (use File/Import/Import binary there).

Try this with Dune, there are all the samples near the end of the file.

Ah, I see now. I didn't know you meant to import the ROM itself. I got it now, that's really cool, thanks. It'd still be cool to be able to extract them with some sort of tool that rips them from VGM files, but this is better than how I was doing it before. Thanks again!

The problem is that VGM format is actually kind of WAV, just designed for another type of data, so it does not contain separate samples, they are stored there in the same form that you would get with a WAV recording.

How's the Linux port coming along? I hope it comes out soon; my Windows computer's video card is messed up and creates random particles in the tracker window.

You can run it using WINE. However, the Linux port would be available soon (I think that the version 4 will be available for Linux and Mac too).

Meh, I'd rather wait as Famitracker barely works for me with Wine... all I've is a netbook.

Btw, there was an unreleased game for the Megadrive called Time Trax and there was only a single song written for it, which was done by Tim and Geoff Follin. There was some sort of sound driver apparently which was written by Dean Belfield that was only used once for that single track and never again heard of. I'm kind of curious about this. What exactly is this driver? What does it do and how does it effect the sound? Is it similar to an expansion chip for the FC or something?

I love that track too. That FM guitar is just awesome.

About the sound driver, it is not like an "expansion chip", rather than that, I think that is an advanced sound-driver that did what I call "Per-Register-FM-Envelopes".

I call "Per-Register-FM-Envelopes" to an envelope that will modify rapidly a certain value of an FM Soundchip. For example, that guitar sound of Time Trax is only obtainable using advanced and rapid TL changes for the fourth operators separately, and mixing that with a great vibrato and pitch slides.

Btw, I was thinking in adding something like this to DefleMask, it would be very cool and experimental.

Sounds complicated. That would be badass if you could impliment that to Deflemask.
I knew that guitar sounded a strange for a Megadrive track, so I kinda looked into the MD version of Time Trax and learned about that driver. It sounds like it can do some amazing things.

Yes, but unfortunately, the driver was never released and didn't even exist a MD Time Trax dump (or the actual test cartridge?)...

HEY, wait... Maybe everything was a lie and that track was only a real guitar riff over a normal Genesis track. A fake YM2612 "melody demo". :P

The guitar definately sounds like Frequency Modulation for sure. Just not MD specifically without that driver support.
I wonder how people even got ahold of that title music... Surely there's a dump of the rom or something that exists.
