I have been using Famitracker on my ACER for about a year, and I don't remember why or when, but I redownloaded Famitracker, and get an error message whenever I open it up, saying "MIDI Error: Could not open MIDI input device!" which I then hit ok to, and then load up a blank VRC6 template and everything works fine, but when I open up a file without opening up Famitracker first it will give the midi error and then if I try and play the song, it will only play the VRC6 specific channels (aka no Square 1, Square 2, Triangle, Noise, or DPCM channels), although this fixes itself if I open another file.
What should I do to fix these problems?

Try deleting FamiTracker, then get a program called CCleaner (a freeware crap cleaning program) to clear FamiTracker's registry entires on your system.

Afterwards, download FamiTracker again & run. If the error still persists, this might be one hell of a problem that only JSR can solve.

What do I do in CCleaner to clear that? Although I may use this in the future, I'm just looking to fix Famitracker for now

CCleaner? What? How would that do anything??? The registry section of the program is made for fixing unused file extensions mostly, I don't see how this would help in the slightest...

Anyways, go to File>Configuration>MIDI and redefine your input device. Clearly, it has appeared that FamiTracker has somehow defined an input device in your settings of which is not there, thus causing this message. Just reset it to <none> and you should be all good!

Yeah, CCleaner is totally unnecessary in this case. Mex's advice is bang on.

That fixed that problem! Thank you! The only problem is now, I try to open up a file while Famitracker isn't open, and it will come to a screen with many different applications and when I try to Browse for Famitracker, it doesn't recognize it (now if I try to open it up it opens with Adobe Reader >.>. Any fix for this?

Also OMG IT'S DANOOCT1 just saying I'm a huge fan and you pretty much inspired me to do all this Famitracker stuff

Thanks for clearing that up; I initially thought it was a registry problem (& yes; CCleaner can clear more than simple file extensions that are missing).

To fix that, open a Windows Explorer window & go to Tools -> Folder Options. In the new window, click the File Types tab & press the NEW button; type FTM as the new file type & press OK. Then, search for the FTM extension from the list & change the program it opens with to FamiTracker.

I'm using Windows 7, so I had to go a bit differently, but because Famitracker doesn't need to be installed, my computer doesn't recognize it as an application, and I when I try to change the program for the FTM file extension, when I search Famitracker, I can select it, but it doesn't show I've selected it when I hit ok, and if I continue, it will instead put the FTM file extension to the first recommended program or first other program. What can I do about this?

I have the same problem... It beats me, but it seems to have something to do with the actual act of loading an ftm into the tracker. I've had times where i load an ftm into an earlier version of FamiTracker, and it resets my opening program to that early version of ANY ftm...

I hope I am making sense?

Zanny77: Try run "famitracker.exe /unregister" and then start it normally to see if the file association will work again. If it doesn't then you might have to find and delete it in the registry editor or with some tool. There are also an assoc-command in windows 7 but I've never got it to work.

And that's where CCleaner would come in (if all else fails).

Windows 7 won't change the association when you're changing the path to the EXE which opens a file type, if it has the same title and author lines. I recommend [url=http://frank.zinepal.com/file-type-manager]File Type Manager to change the path to FamiTracker. Alternately, when you download a new version, overwrite the old FamiTracker.exe with the new one (and copy a backup if you want it).
