First off, please forgive me if I don't use the correct terminology. Basically, I want to insert a blank frame that will stop the current instrument from playing. I think I have seen something similar in other files where it is just a line that runs through the frame. How do I do this. (for those of you familiar with Renoise, it would be the same as hitting the capslock button, essentially turning the track off for that frame, and then turning it back on for the next)
Right now I am just inserting a note with an instrument that has zero volume, but that can get cluttered.
I'll take this one (unless someone else posts a more succinct answer before I hit Send).
What you're looking for is called a note cut. By default, I believe it's set to the \ key, but you can redefine it to whatever you like in the Settings.
And, by the way, you mean row when you say frame above. A frame is a... um, it's.... Well, I know what it is, but I'm having a hell of a time trying to think of a way to put it to words.

However, inserting a note cut doesn't seem to do what I want. Perhaps I should mention that I am trying to do this for triangle.
Note cut makes sense, as I expect it should cut off the note, but for some reason the note keeps playing in my song. Are there settings that I can adjust to make it work properly?
There's note cut and note release. Note cut looks like a single line, note release is two lines. As far as I can tell, with recent versions of Famitracker they are assigned to the same key by default (?) and you end up only getting the note release. Go to File > Configuration and set note cut to something different. (I use the 1 key for it.)
I don't really know how to use note release with Famitracker. (I've never wanted to use it) I think you have to set up your instrument envelopes to have a release or it won't work.
