I've been using Famitracker for about a week now and managed to create 2 songs. The first one was a pretty simple NES tune from final fantasy. ([url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-3Q8ER6kmA]Final Version, [url=http://famitracker.shoodot.net/forum/posts.php?id=1656]the issues I had making it)
For the second one I decided to attempt to cover something I've been wishing to be able to cover for a long time now: A 'nameless' song by Christian Maeland. The original can be found [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTTf7eLgxEI]here. This was quite a step up, because I couldn't listen to channels seperately, and aside from that this song makes use of left and right sounds while the NES is mono. (correct me if I am wrong. I know i could save the channels seperate and use an audio program to force them to a side, but that didn't sound better than what I have now)
Another issue (I always seem to struggle with this) was creating the instruments and making them sound like the original piece. (which was now extra annoying because the GBA makes different types of sounds overall, less "sharp"/"Crisp")
It might be a case of "Bitten off more than you can chew" but on the other side it forces me to improve to make it sound right I guess.
Eventually I came up with the following which is still a work in progress I guess. (Especially the frame usage is a mess right now, I still have to look for patterns that can be repeated. It's also why it doesn't jump to the correct place, but just to the beginning once done) Another thing that i might try to do something about it the collaboration between Square1 and Square2, sometimes they play the same note and that creates an odd sound. For now I tried to fix that by a volume difference, but it's still noticable a little.
I'm sorry if this is the wrong section to post in, as it's still a work in progress but I was hoping for some (constructive!) criticism to improve this piece.
A small update:
- Fixed the frame layout a bit.
- Fixed a wrong note in the Square 1 channel. (non-bass one)
- Corrected the jump back at the end of the song.
The main thing before i consider this finished is still the collaboration between Square1 and Square2 (the non VRC6 ones) and possibly volume adjustment. Any tips on this? (or on any other area that would help improve the piece)
I recently stumbled on the Protracker file of this song by accident. It was originally a piece for the Amiga I think. It's called "Carrier Detect" and can be downloaded here:
I made the previous version "by ear" from the GBA version linked in my original post. I thought it might be interesting to see how my version differs from the original now I can compare the tracker files. Needless to say there were quite some things I did different, or not at all. (The main things were a missing echo on 2A03's square2 and missing parts between existing bass parts) I edited my FTM so it's (hopefully) more like the original.
I just cannot seem to get channel 3 from the MOD file correct though. (even with the tracker file!) It uses 047 and 037 effects for arpeggio on 3 different instruments. (the 2 main ones beeing the ones from channel 1 and 4 in the MOD file (the two square2's in the FTM)) But no matter what I try it seems to sound terrible That part is currently in the triangle section as experiment, but that didn't work out. I put the volume for the instrument on 0. Any tips on this?
All credit goes to Christian Maeland ofcourse. At this point i'm just trying to copy/understand his MOD file. (I do take credit for all the bad sounding parts I guess )
-edit-
I also know the DPCM is off, but I couldn't find one closer to the original . (I tried exporting the sample from the MOD file as WAV, then importing it in famitracker but it then because very different)
