I'm trying to compose a song with instruments that sound like earthbound zero's battle 2 (the one where you fight the lamp at the beginning. Does that game use a special chip or how do I set the instrument to sound like that?

If you have an original NSF file of the game Mother, you can open it in WinAmp with the NSFPlug plug-in; it will tell you how each instrument plays (i.e.: volume, duty cycle, note, etc.).

You can then use that information to try & replicate the instrument you want.

Mother uses no special chips. (In fact, EarthBound Zero, being an American ROM, can't use special chips.)
