Hi,

First, I just wanna say, I've been playing around with FamiTracker for about a month now and it's really such a joy. I love the interface and I love how quick and simple it is to get some great sounding chiptunes in a relatively short amount of time. JSR, many thanks for making such a great toy available to the public!

Anyway, I am now faced with a crisis that I have yet to be able to find a solution to. Every time I now open FamiTracker I get an error message and then the program closes. It's been like this for two days now and I have no idea what started it.

I've been to three other Tech Support sites and they haven't been very much help. So I thought I'd come here to see if any of you fellow trackers have experienced anything like this also and if there is a cure.

The error message is this:

DirectX Error
Error: DirectSound initialization failed!

I then click OK and that's when it says it needs to close. It doesn't really let me do much beyond that.

I'm at a loss as to what I should do. If anyone out there has any ideas at all, I would greatly appreciate it.

Best Regards,
gray-vision

Try formating your Hard drive. Nah, just fucking with you. All you need to do is install the newest version of DirectX.

Well I did actually manage to find a june 07 update to DirectX though that still did not work. All I can say is I've tried just about every solution available out there on the net.

Strange how no one seems to have any idea what could be the problem (Including microsoft). Perhaps I will have to format :)

Thanks anyway,
gray-vision

Hey wait, I don't actually remember exactly what to do, but it had something to do with going in to "regedit" and deleting all FamiTracker stuff.

Then it is supposed to work next time you start it again. As I said, it was something like this that solved that problem, but I don't really remember. Good Luck!

Edit:

I found the answer on www.2a03.org:
Open the registry editor (run "regedit" and search for FamiTracker.
If you find it, open the key called "Sound". You should find three settings to the right: buffer length, sample rate & sample size.
Delete all three of them and try again.
(Be careful using the editor!)
The settings could have broken for some reason.

Try opening a command console and enter famitracker /clearsettings to remove the settings from registry. If that doesn't work then try the instructions in Rubbish post.

Hey Rubbish,

Thank you so much for going through the trouble of getting that info. I found those three keys and deleted the little suckers. Amazingly, I still get the error message! I think we're on to something though...

I noticed when I went into the registry there were some other keys in the Sound folder as well. Bass filter freq, Treble filter damping and Treble filter freq. Should those be in there or can I safely delete them?

And if that doesn't work then I would like to just erase all existence of Famitracker from my PC, redownload it and start fresh. Does anyone know how I could safely do this? jsr, maybe??

I appreciate all the help I can get.

Hey gray_vision!

You can delete the entire Famitracker key if it keeps crashing.

Hi jsr thanks for posting,

I just tried your suggestion in windows command prompt. It said something like "famitracker is not a recognized internal or external command".

Any other ideas? Is it safe to try deleting those other Sound keys?

Thanks,
gray-vision

A-HA!

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
jsr, you just moved to first in line on my donation list :)

Deleting the FamiTracker registry key did the trick. Again, thank you.

And thanks to nensondubois and Rubbish for helping as well. I was really dieing without my daily dose of tracking. Hopefully some day I'll have the skills to post an original track that's actually decent :)

Take care and bye for now,
gray-vision
