This is something that's bothered me for a while; what waveform do those little handheld LCD games use? You know, the ones that you can play card games or Tetris or different games like that.

Recently though I played a game on the PSP that emulates the sounds from these little devices and I have to say it sounded pretty accurate, so I recorded the sound and looked at it, but it's much more complex (or simple?) than I expected.

Since it's hard to explain in words, I'll attach the recording so you can look at it yourself, and a test I did to try to emulate it (although it only works at certain pitches):

Looks to me like a triangle wave with a kink on the downslope, going by the one between 0.70 and 0.80. The kink could be caused by mixing the triangle with something...

I have to say your simulation sounds pretty darn good, though. Certainly sounds like a classic LCD game.

Hmm... well it seems to me sort of like it bops the sound back and fourth in a sine wave at different intervals.

Uh, I guess like this:

(Lucky you, you get to see my awesome MS Paint skills >_>

The Sine wave stays at the same frequency, but it's intensity (volume) and direction changes.

It sounds like two sine waves are interfering with each other.

Judging by the high-pitch waveform, it looks like two waves of different amplitudes are being played at the same time. This could explain why you're seeing multiple peaks of different amplitudes on the same waveform.
