(Let me just say, first of all, that this is my first post and that I bid you all a hello.)

Originally, I had a big textwalling post here about, among other things, how the soundtrack for the NES version of Lemmings was a big disappointment to me and how I was curious as to how it would sound if Sunsoft composed it, but then my mousepad decided to act retarded and sent me back a page so I lost all of it. So I'm just going to say that this is a work-in-progress cover of every track in the Turbo-CD version of Lemmings and leave it at that. Ambitious? Yes, definitely, but I think I have the motivation I need to get it done.

(I actually think the Genesis version's music would be more appropriate to base these covers on considering that console uses generated instruments like the NES, and I do have a work-in-progress FTM file of a Genesis Lemmings cover soundtrack... on another computer, which is broken at the moment. I may post that when I'm done with it though, whenever that is.)

It's obviously not finished yet - all that's done are my renditions of "Cancan" and "Tim 3". I'm posting a demo NSF here so I can get a liberal dose of the good old C&C. I was aiming to emulate the style of Sunsoft's latter-day NES compositions (DPCM bass, triangle toms, et al.) with the music of Gimmick! as my main inspiration, so did I do a good enough job at it?

I estimate the answer is 'no' before I hear it.

And yes the leads ruin the thing, although it is not the only one that ruins the cover.

I see... Could you tell me exactly what it is I need to improve on? Your response was a bit vague. What about the leads is terrible in your eyes? What else about it butchers the ports?

Go read the Sunsoft music in NSFplay before even doing the lead

This computer is running Vista, so NSFplay won't play anything. I guess NSFplug could work too, though...

Also, which Sunsoft music? Any of them?

then use foobar2000, set the tempo to something like 2.82% and study it painfully

and in this case most likely any Sunsoft stuff with sampled bass should work fine

there hasn't been a satisfactory Sunsoft style work I've heard, actually

Ohh. Well, I don't mean to sound patronizing when I say this because I'm not sure if you're aware of the fact, but this is a cover/demake of the TurboGrafx CD Lemmings soundtrack, not a note-for-note emulation of the original NES soundtrack. These are the original songs I based mine off of... I guess I should use a Sunsoft game as reference for my leads instead of trying to make my own, though.

Which songs should I study? I'm a bit new at this, sorry if I'm being irritating.

yes and the demake is not sounding too professional

Don't worry, I might be the last perfectionist you see

I think the original Amiga version had the best Lemmings soundtrack. And I've heard a lot of Lemmings soundtracks (including the TG16 version). I can give you .mod versions of the Amiga soundtrack, too... they sound 100% accurate to the original (not surprising since they're a direct conversion of the original files).

Funny enough, I've had my own Lemmings for NES project sitting around for... well, technically it goes back to November 2008, but I did the bulk of the work sometime earlier this year. I'm putting that in its own thread so as not to hijack this one, though.

Very interesting sound you've got there, BTW. Very different from my own, and I'm amazed you got that sound with just the standard five channels. At first I thought you used extended channels!

Thanks for the compliments, everyone. :3; I'm happy to hear I made it sound like I was using an expansion chip, since Sunsoft was able to accomplish some great things with the NES's sound hardware even without the FME-7.

Anyway, I've spent some time tinkering around in FT with the .NSF file to try and make it sound more Sunsoft-y: adding vibrato, importing a drum sample ripped from Gimmick!, and general instrument cleanup. I think it sounds a lot better, personally...

Wait... You didn't use an expansion chip?? I thought this was made in VRC7 :O.

EDIT: Also, it's very amusing to listen to this song while watching your avatar XD.

Heheh, wow... VRC6 I can understand, but the fact that someone thought I used the VRC7 chip is pretty amazing.

And yeah, it is pretty funny, isn't it? ^^
