I found a few covers of the smb original theme on the forum, and using my ear, put together a vrc7 version that I can find no mistakes in. I only wish I had some dpcm drum clips....

You've got the notes down. ^___^ Now from what I can tell, the lack of note cuts, instrument choice, and how the bass line should be one step lower are the only flaws I found for this cover.

I would make the melody and harmony parts one octave higher, or just create a custom patch for the bass line that is already one octave lower so you don't have to change the octave for every pattern (which is a big pain imo).

I would see if I could put either note-offs or note cuts so the melody parts are shorter (as the original, or leave some long and some short) so it's not so noisy.

As for instrument choice, it is a little boring just having similar sounding instruments (the way it sounds to my ears at least), so what I would do is find a bass patch that works, or create your own. A good way to start off with any custom patch is to crank the attack and release sliders to the right for both mod and carrier and tweak from there. Don't forget the lovely modulation level slider (if you've worked with FM before you know how annoying and/or cheesy things could sound at absolute max unless done right).
For the melody and harmony you can have the same instruments because for this style of music it really works. However, if there is bass in a song, people would like to hear it, so make or choose a contrasting bass patch.

Regarding custom patch: only one custom patch is able to be used at one time, as the FM chip used is a low-budget chip (why it was able to be used in Lagrange Point without jacking up the price too much). However one could use the same custom patch on many channels, if need be. This means you could even have a higher octave custom patch for melody and harmony AND you don't have to change anything for the bass if you don't want to do that.

---+---

Other than that, you are on the right track! Keep at it! ^_____^

BTW, in the newer beta under vrc7, everything past the 2a03 is of a higher volume and may drown out the 2a03's sound a smidgeon, so don't be surprised if that happens to you while listening to this in the beta.

Remember that way better remix which got a really high place in FamiCompo Mini Vol. 7?

With the apparently unedited noise channel and the fact that most note cuts are gone (as in the Pack where the lead cuts itself so note cuts are not required) I am 75% sure that this indeed IS a cheap edit of my work.

Yeah let's hope the day you said this thing is 1st April.
