Hey guys, first time poster here. My brother has been pleading me to start famiTracking to get a more authentic sound to my chiptunes. At first I started crying at the interface because i'm so used to using Piano rolls in FL Studio 9 with VST's, but slowly started to read the forums and learning tricks here and there. This is my first track, TMNT2 - Scene 1

I had so much trouble reproducing the perfect volume settings on the instruments, that I decided I should just post it here and get some help from you guys.

There are little mistakes here and there, but all in all it sounds very good. It was all tracked by ear.

All feedback is welcomed, even Nicetas_c. Although it WILL be brutal.

And so there are wrong Zxxs, obviously wrong vibratos and even 4xys at places that aren't supposed to have!

5P Rank: 2.6/5

It's good to see newcomers THIS brave to write the name nicetas_c in their first posts anyway.

And you expect a brutal review, so...

Wait me a second, or more or less a day... for I haven't babysitted people for a long time already.

I don't need babysitting, I need constuctive criticism. Pointing out the mistakes is one thing, now show off your skills (Because I know you've got them) and help me fix it. This is my first famitrack ever, OBVIOUSLY it will have all kinds of mistakes.

Reason I posted this is because of the lack of TMNT songs.

This song is so errorneous that I have to use Frames instead of Patterns to spot out the errors... with the DPCM instruments messed up and the frame lengths messed up as well, things are even more entertaining.

1. Wrong tempo: It should be 150 with this repeating throughout the song:
F04
F03

2. The hihat at the beginning should have a volume envelope 5 1 0 and an arpeggio envelope -2 -1 assuming you are still using F-#. Also remove the channel volumes.

3. The snare drums use Z50 and the toms/bass drums use Z7F.

4. Frame 10 Row 38 is completely redundant, move everything below one row upper.

5. DPCM errors: (note: in hexadecimal)
There should be an A#3 00 on Frame 00 Row 06,
an A-3 05 on Frame 00 Row 1E,
an A-3 05 on Frame 01 Row 1C AND THEN every DPCM note in Frame 01 should be two row earlier,
an A#3 00 on Row 1E after that,
an A-3 05 on Frame 04 Rows 0E and 12,
nothing on Frame 04 Rows 16, 1A,
an F-4 06 on Frame 05 Row 1A,
an E-4 06 on Frame 05 Row 1C,
an A#3 00 on Frame 06 Row 18,
nothing on Frame 0A Row 2A,
an A#3 00 on Frame 0B Rows 18, 1A, 1C, 1E,
an A#3 00 on Frame 12 Rows 18, 38, 3C,
nothing to be changed in Frame 13 and so on.

Now I found your problem: You use the same pattern number, edited that pattern and forgot about that the same pattern is used earlier in the song. The best idea is to make all channels in Frame xx use pattern xx and then remove duplicates.

Expect more tomorrow. Probably.

Thanks man, That is what I needed. What do you use to pin point all these things? Just your knowledge of the program, or do you use some type of program to tell you all the Zxy's and all that stuff? I'm curious to know, so I won't have to bother you everytime I make something new.

I don't mind remaking the structure of the song completely, So it looks less errorneous as you say. Any ideas how I should set up. Frame length, rows and all that.

And I'm confused about the f03, and f04. I'm not sure when to use either of them.

I really appreciate your help, and i'm not lazy, I will remake it completely if I have to, I want to learn the proper way to setup a song, before starting composition.

And please, if you know of a good program to analyze .nsf's. I would love to know.

EDIT: I finally figured out what you meant about the Tempo and using F04,F03. Could you explain why it is this way? What is this switching back and forth actually doing? Quite confusing for a no0b.

when tempo is set to 150, each row lasts exactly x frames, where x is the speed setting.

Put in all the Fxx commands in the DPCM channel's fx column.
F04
F03
F04
F03
... etc
and now you can see which rows last longer than others.

it's getting better and better with the tweaks added. I know I messed up on frame 10, but I get really confused trying to fix it, and I make it sound worse. I can't quite get my finger on it.
