Voting has started! Click originals or covers at the bottom of the FC Mini 7 screen to vote. What did you think of the songs? What were your favorites? The other FC thread was huge so I decided to make a new one. I'll be posting my thoughts later.

I haven't heard through all the covers yet so I'll just mention originals for now.

Entry 14 and 18 are my favorites, hands down. Also, I thought it was quite a lot of songs that was "outside my style", in lack of a better explanation, for example trance/techno/something inspired songs which I don't care for at all ;/ Other than that, a lot of great stuff! Had fun listening to (most)of it! ^^

Entry 40 is probably not a serious entry so I don't think I'm hurting anyones feelings, but that was the worst I've ever heard in my life

Regarding covers, the Ducktales one is probably my current favorite, gotta listen to more covers tho...

Absolutely loved the competition. Listening along with the people in #mod_shrine with covers was hilarious and fun, as well.

Personal favs from original:

Penguins of the Apocalypse: This one is one of my favorites and it just sounds really cool. Don't know who'd be the person to make this one, though.
Cheetahmen 3D: Just some classic good stuff. Parts of it remind me of virt but I'm p. sure he didn't enter or anything.
12-Bar Bloops: My favorite out of all of the songs. Just plain catchy, and I LOVE it when it gets really into it.
Bipolar Man: Nothing from this one really stands out to me, but it's pretty awesome nonetheless.
Surfing the NES: Shouldn't have to explain why.
The Legend of Tristendo: Another standard one, but it still sounds pretty cool.
dog radar: This one is awesome.

Favorites in cover:

Ice Valley: Really cool (haw haw) with imitating (I think) the Sonic games' ice stages. Kind of standard but I like the concept.
Invasion of the 7th Planet: Intro's awesome, and so's the outro. The middle is cool, too. Very atmospheric, as well.
Casino Night Zone: Really generic but the outcome is cool. The triangle was a bit ehhh but with this song it at least sort of fit.
Legendary Wings: Pretty hectic, like it a lot. Never heard the original but I'm sure it was equally cool sounding.
PTCG - Club Master Duel!: Initially not expecting a whole lot but when this one kicks in it sounds badass. Particularly love the triangle action going on. Ending is really awesome, too.
Prelude & Fugue in C Minor: Funky and fresh. This one made me laugh the whole way through simply because of the concept. Love it.
Super Mario Bros Theme: The execution of this one is awesome. Bonus points for all-starz, as well.
King Crimson/21st Century Schizoid Man: hahahahahahaha

so yeah all in all cool beans. Wonder if anyone can guess which one in originals I made?????

I've been pretty staggered by the quality this year.

Originals:

02 House cleaning music: a simplistic song but it's lovely and has great chords. just a shame it isn't longer. nice to keep looping though.
14 Penguins Of The Apocalypse: well what can i say about this. this is probably everyone's highlight from this year. it's pretty awesome and hard to fault. everything is perversely sculpted and shined up, surely the result of a lot of hard work. just a great catchy tune, as well.
19 Rise 'n' Shine: the harmonies here are really great, lots of cool voicings always being switched up and kept interesting. clever stuff. has a light and breezy, happy feel that I enjoy.
23 updraft: for being 2a03-only it really pulls some neat tricks out of the bag and is honestly pretty amazing. another great song with interesting 7th harmonies.
33 The Identity Crisis: totally genius! I love the concept and the execution. I'm still trying to work out who made it but they're a clever sausage whoever they are.
35 Monkeytronic: I love the franticness and dynamism of this track, totally boss music. Amazing solo too. For being so nuts it never sounds awkward or stilted.
54 Fun Times: the reasons I like this are the same as for 19 Rise 'n' Shine. Always shifting chords and the light jazzy feel really hit the spot for me. Love it.
66 set blaster=a220 i5 d1: the most amazing use of VRC7 I've heard, I didn't even think it was possible to have sounds morphing like that. Quirky song too, just really cool and fun.
67 Posr Chik: this stands out to me as the most interesting and evocative song of the contest, unalike anything else in the contest musically, totally idiosyncratic. It's got an intense feel, to me. The chord work is just really damn clever. I don't think it'll place well though, as it seems like it'd be a hard song to appreciate.
69 Strap-on penis: a delicious blend of Super Mario Land 2 and Kirby's Adventure. Something like that! It's very reminiscent of Kazumi Totaka's music anyway. Love it! Again, too short, but I love what's there.

Covers:

02 Ice Valley: I think chip covers are most interesting when they're reductions of songs that were originally full audio production, so this one gets major props from me for that. The VRC7 sound really works well for the reinterpretation. Good source tune too
08 Fifteen Minnows: Super-short cover of a track by mint (#mod_shrine regular.) As an entry it has limited merit but come on... it's so nice!
17 Casino Night Zone: to me, reducing Genesis music to VRC7 seems kind of weird and not that interesting besides a proof of concept, however that criticism is mostly negated by the fact this cover is really accurate and tastefully done.
36 Super Star Suite: Yeah let's just face it, this is super goddamn awesome. I'm a huge fan of Kirby franchise music. There's some really cool reinterpretation in this, extra trills and ornaments that weren't there before. The transitions between songs are really smooth and transparent too. Great.
41 HEY YOU: I don't know the source tune at all, but this song really sticks out to me. Very catchy.
49 Super Mario Bros Theme: I really appreciate since it's based off of Soyo Oka's arrangement for Super Mario All Stars, which had really lush padded out harmonies. In fact, it's more fun to listen to in chip form since SMAS samples were kinda ghey. Plus it's accurate. GOOD STUFF.
63 CHRONO TRIGGER - kaze no doukei: I struggle to rationalise liking this for any other reason than OMG CHRONO TRIGGER. But nah, it's a really good cover, with some interesting sound design.
65 King Crimson21st Century Schizoid Man: When the DPCM came in I seriously lolled. But it's a good cover anyway. And a good song~
66 Out Run - LAST WAVE: Out Run music is super awesome. Not very interesting as a cover, granted, so I mostly like this on the merits of the original.

Hmmm, the thing I have always thought about when voting. Since you probably really like your own entry, should you still vote like 0 points on that one? Or should you vote like someone else had composed it, and really give the points you should have given it anyway...

I've always given myself 0 points, cause it feels kind of weird to admire yourself. Still it feels kind of weird not liking it at all...

Anyway, I will go through the originals this weekend. Is there anyone that have made mp3s from them? It would be nice listening when out walking, on my way to work and so on... Please leave comments when voting. I think everyone derserve some comments!

...God damn Cover #13.

Otherwise that, they're all sounding quite nice.

Also Kreese, it would be pretty unfair if you voted for yourself, yeah.

I think it's ok to vote for yourself as long as you're expressing honest opinion and not just trying to influence the score.

Oh yeah that 'propaganda' DPCM thing

I think I will not vote for anything, and if I do, I will not vote anything higher than 1.

EDIT: Just realized that original #10 attempts to nail the CV1 style, yet it ends up failed IMO.

this is a problem with how scores in FamiCompo are calculated. they're cumulative/tallied, rather than averaged. if they were averaged, it'd be simple - you just wouldn't leave a score for your own songs, and that'd be it, there'd be no real loss or gain, because not leaving a score would not be the same as leaving zero. but since they're cumulative, if you don't vote for your own songs, you're effectively giving them zero and put yourself at a disadvantage, especially if two or more people work on one song and agree not to score their own song. entrants who don't score at all would also get an advantage by not having to give other entries points, effectively giving themselves a 5 anyway (if everyone followed the no self-voting "rule".)

in #mod_shrine there's a general concensus that you should score your own entries a '5' as a precaution. if everyone does this, then it's fair, plus it gives an incentive to send scores (and there's no advantage to be taken from not sending scores that way.) in fact, this is really the only fair way to score in a cumulative scoring system. i don't think k-> manually removes self-votes (ideally he should though.)

i wish there was a more cut and dried (and enforced) guideline on famicompo voting, but since there isn't, this is the best thing to do.
I think I will not vote for anything, and if I do, I will not vote anything higher than 1.
your choice, but if you do do this, your scores won't mean a lot in the grand scheme of things. they'll have very little influence on the results.

Originals:
#1 - I actually like not the whole song, but just the first 15 seconds.. Too bad it didn't continue into a slow sad song
I have never heard something like from plain 2a03
#12 - The melody here caught me, drums are also decent here. The thing I don't like here is that triangle arp part or how should I name it
#62 - I like it as a whole, it's awesome

#55 - I laughed :D

Covers:
#15 - Dunno why, but I smile when I hear this song Very nice happy-sounding thing
#22 - The effects are impressive here, for me at least, reflect the atmosphere I guess quite good. Until 1.20
#25 - Reminds me of Shatterhand music theme of one of the stages. Sounds good
#31 - Like.
#46 - The melody is epic and so is the cover.

Hahaha, original #66 is an interesting little beast.

The song length specified at the entry list is a total misnomer. There is NO consistent part or loop at all (or at least within the 20 minutes worth of time I tried to WAV-dump and examine). The whole entire thing after 3:20 sounds like it's procedurally generated. Either that, or each of all the individual tracks have their own unique loop point -- something that is possible in MML / (PP)MCK. I think even the VRC7 custom patch morphs its settings over time, and never sounds the same. The best part is that it's so fluidly composed (read: the right amount balance between melodic changes and repetitiveness) that you hardly notice that it didn't loop even after leaving it on for so long.

IMO this one, hands down, wins this year in technical uniqueness. (aside from all the wacky $4011 hijinx, of course)
