I had planned once to take a classical piece that I liked and turn it to chiptune for practice. After listening to a very good set of Tetris covers around here, and after listening to Shnabubula's alternatives for Tetris songs (back at 8bitcollective), I decided to do a similar project.
So here it is: a fragment from Sergei Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto, the closest I could make it fit to the style of Tetris (and a little bit forced to loop). Criticism is more than welcome.
Mind you, for the mood of a Tetris song, I feel that Rachmaninov's music isn't exactly suitable for it. Most of the songs in Tetris are traditional songs from the Soviet era, so you may be better off looking at some songs from the Red Army Choir, in my opinion.
Or, you could try something by Vladimir Horowitz's version of Danse Macabre:
I indeed made this off an MP3, yeah; and I know the middle part is pretty much botched.
And as for the mood, I kind of got the same mood from the real music B and from this piece... Had I tried a more "music A" mood, I would have tried with Mussorgsky.
Yes, but it doesn't capture the essence of the music as well as other melodies can.
As you know, Tetris is a fast-paced game. In the different Tetris games made over the decades, only a small selection of traditional Russian music was used for the fast-pace mood that it set it the game (examples: Korobeyniki & Troika).
If you want something to set a decent mood for a Tetris game, try the song Katyusha. I have an MP3 of an original 45 RPM record, if you're interested.
