Is there a way to do this that doesn't involve resting or just holding the note?

Either use the note cut command (push '1' on your keyboard), or...

Use the volume column to lower the volume at the end of the note. Then restore full volume at the start of the next note (this won't work on the triangle channel).

Note cut is rest for that note. Is there some other way?

Edit your instrument's volume so that 0 is the starting volume and then use your actual desired volume. So, for example, you could do "0 15."

Now, if you're going to use this method you might want to do it with all instruments. You know, for consistency and whatnot.

Here's an example of how to do it several ways.
(Attached is a .FTM file, you can open it in Famitracker)
You can use the note cut with the delay command (Gxx) to delay the note cut until right before the next note.

Or you can use the Sxx command. It specifies how many frames you want the note to last.

Or you can use volume settings, either in the volume column, or in the instrument parameters.

Or alternatively use an I00 for every note, as heard in many NES soundtracks.

The use of H00 is relatively low as it does not allow other pitch changes to be executed.

Note: Only works on 2A03 square channels.

ha, i didn't know about the I00 method. it probably has very limited use though since in more dense arrangements you mightn't even hear it. however in classic chiptuning it might be useful. i dunno. Sxx, notestop, volume column and volume envelopes all work fine.
