This might seem slightly off-topic, but it does concern FamiTracker.
I have this problem for about a week and I tried everything I knew, but nothing worked yet so I'm getting pretty desperate. Maybe someone here had the same problem.
The problem is: I want to be able to record sound from the computer (for example in Audacity, or in programs that capture the entire screen and audio, like CamStudio) so I can record and publish my 8-bit music (I know you can export it to .wav and then convert to whatever format but I want to have the screen recorded as well). Basically, I need the "what-you-hear" option, or Stereo Mix in the Recording Devices.
I tried recording the screen without audio, with the audio exported to .wav and then I tried to combine and synchronize the two in Adobe Premiere but this by no means works, and it's too complicated and buggy. So I really need the Stereo Mix option. However, it doesn't show up, even when I check the "Show disabled devices" option. I tried reconfiguring the programs, reinstalling programs, reinstalling sound drivers, reinstalling Windows but nothing worked so far.
Also, I tried the same thing on another computer, which has Windows XP instead of Win 7, and it has Stereo Mix option, but it's grayed out, so it doesn't work. Reinstalling the drivers didn't help here either.
The worst case scenario is probably that I'll have to buy a better sound card (this one's integrated) but I want to know is there anything else to try.
when I did my famitracker records, I used aTube catcher without sound to capture the famitracker visuals, then I outputted to wave and put them together in Windows Movie Maker... it's definitely not hard.
Another option is putting a cable from "speaker out" to "line in" and recording the line in.
How about muting the system's volume when doing your screen recording? And if you manage to find a codec or a filter driver to record to WMV, you can get some serious compression with minimal loss (considering that, if the system is muted, no sound will be recorded).
Afterwards, just use FamiTracker to export the sound to WAV & import both files into a video editing program like Movie Maker (or my favorite, Sony Vegas).

Technology: the one thing that's hated & cursed at by all engineers, technologists, scientists & technicians!
Wow, thanks a lot for your useful comments, I finally made it! I should have went for simplicity in the first place. I complicated everything with Adobe Premiere and CamStudio.
CamStudio had weird graphical errors while recording (the pixels would just randomly "explode" in the recording - suppose it has to do with resolution settings), while on the other side aTube worked like a charm.
Also, Windows Movie Maker is just great for movie and audio synchronization and it's pretty simple, while Adobe Premiere had a lot of problems with the precision and overall video quality (not to mention that it doesn't support a bunch of common video and audio formats so it requires another bunch of converters).
Thanks again for a GREAT deal of help, this thing has been bugging me for a long time.
i've heard that recording audio in Windows 7 is an absolute pain. like you say, simply using a What U Hear or Stereo Mix option under XP does the job just fine, it's something I rely on all the time and would be pretty lost without it. having to resort to connecting the speaker out to the line in is an awful compromise, having to go out to analog then back to digital will degrade the sound. do you seriously have to do that on Win7? why would they remove that functionality...
just reading [url=http://www.sevenforums.com/sound-audio/9590-record-what-you-hear-3.html]this thread at the moment. it might give you some info. lots of people having trouble, others having no problem.
- Go to Control Panel
- Choose Sound
- Go to the Recording panel
- Right click and then choose show disabled devices
- Right click the greyed out Stereo Mix and choose enable
Now you can use Stereo Mix!!
That's how I did it anyways, also Fraps has support for recording sounds from the program it's working with.
