in music, a rest refers to a step that does not contain a note. in tracking this extends to a step that is devoid of any commands whatsoever. This type of command in tracking takes up 0 ram (in rmt at least). It is not the same as a note release as I originally thought.
Aaahh, so it's kinda like a blank space. In FT you can just press the down arrow but I see you have issues with that, right?
There's the hyphen key too (-) but it inserts a blank space instead of just skipping a row. That means, if you position the FT cursor on a note and press the hyphen key, it will remove the note and skip to the next row.
Placing a lot of note releases doesn't have any effect if you don't define a release sequence on an instrument (unless you're using VRC7, it behaves differently there), so using them to measure rows or just skipping them should be fine for you.
EDIT: Now that I've read the previous posts again, I think the hyphen key is what you're looking for to insert a blank row. Just make sure you don't delete any notes accidentally!
