This.

You know most public places have strict computer usage rules, right? As a matter of fact, many places don't allow you to bring your own external media for any reason, let alone your own software.

But consider yourself very lucky that they didn't suspend you & keep the drive. At least they allow you to bring your own laptops (my old high school still doesn't allow people to bring any device whatsoever, including any type of computer media other than school-supplied floppy disks).

As for FamiTracker's "ability to run a proxy communicate to the internet," I'm very sure it's because of the fact that FamiTracker was made as an MFC application (on top of the other programs you have on your key). In other words, they consider everything that you do as hacking unless you follow their computer usage policy.

Stop trying to make sense of it. Famitracker is a music program, it doesn't use a proxy to communicate to the internet, it doesn't scan the internet for illegal songs. You don't know the situation of his school... maybe they allow people to run whatever on their computers, maybe they don't. Stop trying to rationalize their ignorance.

As much as I respect you (& believe me because I do,) you seem to forget; you're also guilty of the exact same things that you've accused me for:

A. You tried making sense of the matter first, by blaming the staff's overreaction on taking "hacking" in movies literally.

B. You, just like me, also don't know the situation of the school, in spite of the fact that the OP made it clear that they don't allow any external programs on their network. Yet, you also don't know (or didn't stop to think) that I may have had a similar (or even the same) experience prior (& I did with my old high school). This said, only Wingman626 & the OP truly know the situation because they're the ones in it.

C. You have also tried to rationalize what can be misinterpreted as the OP's ignorance of a school's otherwise just rule (had it not been blown out of proportions by the school's staff). Not that I'm blaming the OP for any misdeed; he just did something without knowing. The point I tried to make is that schools (& almost all public places with network access) have strict rules & would do anything to enforce it (even if it's retarded).

By the way, I already know that FamiTracker wasn't programmed to communicate over any network. I just said that the guys who hacked the OP's disk linked FamiTracker to networking because MFC libraries can be used for networking. I did not try to refute any opinions or actions (least of all yours & the OP's).

If you're allowed to express a simple opinion, why am I not allowed? Is it because you don't agree with me? Or do you think I expect everyone to agree with me? If you have anything else that you'd like to attack me on, accuse me of or otherwise argue with me about, please PM me unless you want to completely ignore your duty as a mod in the open. Otherwise, I'm open to any discussion, as long as it's more civilized.

i was making sense of why they'd be freaked out in the first place, not making sense of why they would do "research" and come up with absolutely crazy things.

yeah i just think it'd be odd if they knew enough to know what MFC is and that it can be used for networking, but would also come up with a lot of misinformation about ft

maybe i should make a non-mod account called rushjet2 or something so people don't interpret fairly idle comments on a situation as a moderator bossing people around. maybe i should highlight things in super RED LOL if they are adminny.

hey, if i do it doesn't automatically make a which is kind of odd because the italics and underline work fine.

Just the fact that he was threatened with suspension for bringing a USB key of (what I'm sure that school would unwittingly call unauthorized) software should be a clue that the school actually has a rule against this (one that was completely overblown, mind you).

By the way, I said what I said not because of your status on the forum; I would have said the same thing regardless of your being a mod or not. But your being a mod does (or should) imply a certain amount of responsibility on your part. This said, I'm glad you cleared things up & I apologize for misinterpreting you & posting such a response.

Where's JSR when you need him? For whatever reason, there has been a definite lack of developer smackdown on these "admins" who clearly have no idea what the fuck they're talking about. Or, if they do, they just don't like you guys. Whichever.

There has been no administration in this thread; why are we talking about admins?

Unless they lock or edit posts, ban someone, or threaten to do so, there is no difference between an admin and a regular poster.

Eletious; Rushjet1 didn't abuse his authority as a mod in any way. He just made a comment as a regular user & I misinterpreted it. Let's just go on with the OP's original discussion.

Hey guys. I am quite frankly disappointed at my school's staff. I was "caught" tracking in the school's media center, and after a few minutes, a couple of school admins stopped by, and accused me of hacking the network

Not JSR, or the webmaster, or anyone else relating to this site, SCHOOL admins, like the network administrator.

EDIT: Rushjet1, the blueness hurts my eyes.

Thank you Rushjet. I meant the school "admins," not the admins here. The admins here are cool.

And IaTM, I remember when Dan posted that. I about exploded.
