Oh! That reminds me actually. Sometimes when I listen to a note, I whistle that note until I find the correct key in Famitracker that matches the sound. I'm sure you could do that, it helps quite a bit.

That's great advice, actually.
Having a natural ear for music usually doesn't happen, so basically all he has to do is learn to train himself to notice differences in pitch, so yeah, I'd say that's a great idea actually.
Well, particularly the piano bit. Being able to connect your voice with what you play/compose on keys, at any degree, helps a ton. It seems some ppl just fiddle around with tones on FT without knowing how to establish what key they're in when it'd be a better idea to flesh out their ideas beforehand.
