How to make drums

Poodlecock: notorious? wtf

There are several ways how to make drums on 2A03. All of them were used in original games music.

Noise-only drums
This method uses noise channel only. Different drums use different volume envelopes and noise periods. Usually volume envelope is a fade-off with different duration. Low noise periods are suitable for kick drums, middle for snares and high for hats and cymbals. Although sound of those drums doesn't very resemble the real drums, it's possible to make good percussion part using it properly.

Noise-only drums were used mostly in older japanese games. Best examples are music of Iku Mizutani (Shatterhand, Kage) and Ukkari Yamanishi (Dragon Fighter). Capcom composers used mostly noise-only drums, sometimes also with tone channels for toms. Some western composers also used noise-only drums (Rare games), though most of them used noise and tone drums.

Noise and tone drums
This method uses tone channels - usually triangle - in combination with the noise channel to emulate percussions. In the context of video games, this technique was used mostly by western composers. The technique involves using fast downward pitch slides on a tone channel to imitate musical part of drum sound spectrum. For instance, for a kick drum sound, one will start from a low note and use a fast pitch slide with no accompanying noise sound; for a snare drum, however, you need to use relatively higher notes with a slightly longer pitch slide, as well as the noise channel (make sure to balance the noise and tone volumes properly; experiment with different volume and pitch combinations to find different kinds of sounds). Toms use even more higher pitch and longer duration with no noise. Often times square channels are used instead of the triangle.

In FamiTracker, the downward pitch slide for the tone drums can be achieved using either effect 2xx, the instrument's pitch sequence (works best by using a single value with a loop point), or even the instrument's arpeggio sequence (for more control over the exact pitch).

If you want to use a single channel for both musical and percussive parts (such as using the triangle for percussions and bass, for example), it is crucial to make your drum sounds very short, and to restore normal pitch shortly after the drum note is played.

This method was also used in Sunsoft games which used sampled bass trick (Journey to Silius, Gremlins, and others). Other famous users of this technique include Tim and Geoff Follin (Silver Surfer, The Incredible Crash Dummies, Tom & Jerry and more), Neil Baldwin (James Bond Jr., Ferrari Grand Prix Challenge, Lethal Weapon and more).

DPCM drums
DPCM drums are the simplest way to make drums with realistic sound. This method uses the Delta Pulse-code Modulation (DPCM) channel to play samples of drums. DPCM channel allows only low quality samples, but it's usually sufficient for getting satisfying drums. DPCM drums usually consist of just a kick sample and a snare sample (sometimes tom samples), combined with hat and cymbal sounds using the noise channel. This method was used mostly in later japanese games. Examples are most of Konami and Tecmo games.

Because the DPCM channel's level affects the volume of the noise and triangle channels, DPCM samples must be as short as possible, without long fade-outs.

Poodlecock: This

Channels: Squares 2 and 3 are rather normal. But Square 1 is
really messed up. And I mean *really*. Many effects workable
on most channels, like 0xx, 4xx, 7xx, etc. will not work on
Channel 1.

Instruments
Volume: Works as expected on 2 & 3, does not work at all on 1.

Arps: Works as expected on 2 & 3, does not work at all on 1.

Pitch/Hi-Pitch: Works as expected on 2 & 3, erratic behavior on
1.

Noise mode: Does nothing on 1. On 2 & 3, click the top (blue)
button at the bottom to activate square mode. Click the bottom
(purple) button to activate noise mode. *cheers*

Volume Control
Here's where Sunsoft 5B in Famitracker gets real weird, so
listen up.

Volume works as expected on 2 & 3, but must be entered with
the note on 1. So speed 1 is the best way.

But there's a catch to the volume control on 1:

Sunsoft 5B-specific Effects
This is really weird. The Hxx, Ixx, and Jxx effects do
different things depending on whether they are entered with a
note, or just an instrument. Either way, they only work on 1,
and will disable all volume control for 1, until you reset the
program. That's right. you have to X out to re-enable it.
Opening a new file, stopping and re-playing WILL NOT DO!

Hxx: Lower byte envelope speed... I think? This means fine tune.

Ixx: Upper byte envelope speed? This is coarse tune.

Jxx: Envelope type:
*J00-J03: Decay w/o repeat
*J04-J07: Attack w/o repeat
*J08: Decay w/ repeat
*J0A/J0E: Attack w/ repeat

The decay and attack w/ repeat envelopes can be manipulated in-
to playing waveforms, if no note is playing. But note cut has
no effect, and volume controls do not, either. So you're left
with nothing.

Poodlecock: Sparta!

-J00-J03: Decay w/o repeat
-J04-J07: Attack w/o repeat
-J08: Decay w/ repeat
-J0A/J0E: Attack w/ repeat

The decay and attack w/ repeat envelopes can be manipulated in-
to playing waveforms, if no note is playing. But note cut has
no effect, and volume controls do not, either. Mind=f***ed.

Jayster, with the TMNT: Tournament Fighter - Scrapyard Swing remix!

With 18.7, and an outstanding entry indeed, Jayster achieves the highest score in DemoCompo history so far. Close behind with 17.5 is Necrophageon, with his amazing DKC2 cover! And neck and neck with 16.9 and 16.8 respectively, SriK and Mr_Master come 3rd and 4th - and indeed, Mr_Master steals 3rd place in the Musicality category!

NSF Importer

Poodlecock: /* Other */

The NSF Importer is a special version of FamiTracker 0.3.7 with part of the NotSoFatso code built into it. It allows users to import valid <tt>.NSF</tt> files (see below) and subsequently save the result into a <tt>.FTM</tt> file. It was developed by rainwarrior, and its initial release was on July 8, 2011.

The latest version is v0.5 (see External links below for change log).

It should be noted that this tool is only meant to carry out open & save operations. Editing is disabled on purpose to encourage using the official version of FamiTracker for editing.

What it does
The Importer works by playing back the selected <tt>.NSF</tt> file using NotSoFatso, which is hiding inside this special build of FamiTracker (no actual sound is produced during this step). NotSoFatso then analyses any and all data it finds on a per-frame basis, and retranscribes it in FamiTracker in the form of a 900-bpm (or 750-bpm for PAL) module. This means that the resulting module plays at full speed, and that any vibrato, pitch envelopes, duty cycle envelopes etc. are represented using effects Pxx, Vxx etc.

How to use the Importer
#Use File > Import NSF... to bring up the import dialog
#Browse to the <tt>.NSF file</tt> of your choice and press Open
#The Importer Options dialog box pops up, prompting you to select the track within the NSF to import (if applicable), how much time to record, etc.
#Click OK
#Wait for the tune to import, hit Play, and enjoy!
#Repeat the importing process if you wish to fix pattern length and/or other options.
#(Optional) Save the project as a <tt>.FTM</tt> file.

Setting a loop point
Setting a loop point in an imported module is always a bit of an iffy proposition. It helps if, in the Importer Options dialog, you set it up so that the pattern length matches with the tune; that way, the only thing left is to add a Bxx command on the last pattern to make the pattern loop to position xx. In some cases, however, this is impossible (for instance if the original <tt>.NSF</tt>'s tempo is uneven or the tune uses a time signature change halfway through). In those cases, you may have to copy & paste a portion of the beginning of the loop to "fill" the final pattern of the module in order to be able to use Bxx.

It's always a good idea to clear unused patterns (Edit > Clean up > Remove unused patterns) after setting a loop point in order to optimise file size.

Known limitations
The Importer will always attempt to import as much data as it can, but anything it doesn't know how to handle will be discarded. As of version 0.5, the program is subject to the following limitations:

2A03, MMC5 & VRC6
*Hardware length counters are not supported by FamiTracker, and are essentially rounded down to the nearest frame by the import process. For the shortest settings the sound may turn on and off faster than a single frame and be missed entirely. This problem is sometimes seen in hi-hat sounds on the noise channel, or blips in the triangle channel.

*Hardware volume slides are not supported by FamiTracker, and are approximated once per frame. For the fastest setting this gives a small loss of smoothness; for other settings the difference is negligible.

*Hardware pitch sweeps that do not reset the starting pitch are not supported by FamiTracker, and may sound incorrect in the import.

VRC6
*FamiTracker supports only 5 bits of sawtooth volume control (0-F in volume channel, plus an additional bit as V00 or V01). The lowest bit is simply discarded.

DPCM
*Changes to loop or length after the sample's initial trigger are not supported by FamiTracker, and will just continue to play with the initial setting.

*Sample offsets are partially supported. If a sample is played with a low (or no) offset first, and then a higher offset later, the higher offset will be picked up and the sample will be reused. If the higher offset is played first, there will be redundant copies of that sample. (The importer only does one pass, so it will not go back to replace earlier offset samples.) This feature seems more or less particular to FamiTracker NSFs; examples in original NSF ROMs have yet to be discovered.

*Raw PCM playback is not supported, though direct $4011 volume writes are. If used, it may show up as a series of random looking Zxx commands.

*DPCM bank switching mid-track is not supported, as Famitracker 0.3.7 does not have a mechanism for this. This has not been seen yet in original NSF ROMs, but is sometimes used in modern tracks. Where it is used, samples that have overlapping memory addresses may sound corrupt.

FDS
*The sound of FDS modulation tables in FamiTracker may sound very different than in other emulators. This is not a bug in the NSF importer, but the resulting import may not sound like you expect in FamiTracker. Exporting back to <tt>.NSF</tt> will help verify that it is getting the correct values.

VRC7
*Pitch and patch changes mid-note are accomplished by abusing 3FF to avoid retriggering the tone. This seems to work okay.

Other
*The Sunsoft 5B and Namco 163/Namco 106 expansions are not supported by FamiTracker 0.3.7; any <tt>.NSF</tt> containing either will be imported without the expansion.
*Multi-expansion <tt>.NSF</tt>'s are not supported by FamiTracker at this stage; the importer will keep one expansion and discard the rest when importing such files.
*SuperNSFs are not supported. Period.

Example Files
:Smb1import.ftm - Complete Rip
:Gyromite-5.ftm

Now that DemoCompo 7 is over, the results are in, with the winner Jayster, with the TMNT: Tournament Fighter - Scrapyard Swing remix!

I think? This means fine tune
Ixx: Upper byte envelope speed? This is coarse tune.
Jxx: Envelope type:
-J00-J03: Decay w/o repeat
-J04-J07: Attack w/o repeat
-J08: Decay w/ repeat
-J0A/J0E: Attack w/ repeat

The decay and attack w/ repeat envelopes can be manipulated in-
to playing waveforms, if no note is playing. But note cut has
no effect, and volume controls do not, either. Mind=f***ed.

Effect Pxx

Poodlecock:

Pxx - fine pitch offset setting. xx = offset, 80 is default. New frequency register will be subtracted by (xx - 80).
Even though different chips may have different pitch tables, which are reflected in the instrument macros, values greater than P80 will always raise the pitch, and lower than P80 will always lower it, though not necessarily by the same amount across different expansions.
Effects Hxy and Ixy

Poodlecock:

:Not to be confused with effects Hxx and Ixx, both on the FDS.

Hxy and Ixy are the two effects that control hardware sweep up and down, respectively. They can be used only on 2A03 square channels. x = period (0 - 7), y = shift (1 - 7).

Alternate use
The Hxy and Ixy effects can be used for a specific purpose that is beyond their intended use. Because FamiTracker resets the pulse wave's phase when triggering a hardware sweep, inputting H00 or I00 acts as a "phase reset" effect (inserts a "click" in the pulse), which is useful for separating two subsequent identical notes without using note cuts or changing the channel's volume.
Effect Hxx

Poodlecock:

:Not to be confused with effect Hxy on the 2A03.

Hxx is an effect exclusive to the FDS channel. It controls the depth of the modulation, overriding the setting in the FDS's instrument window. The valid range for xx is 00 - 3F.
