I'm not even completely sure what I'm asking here... but here goes.

I'm having trouble making sense of the noise channel. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the different kinds of noises that are produced by hitting different keys in the noise channel. Not only that, the "notes" are not reflected the same as in the melodic channels (instead of having notes and octaves, they'll say something like '5-#' sometimes, and I have no idea what that means).

Does anyone have any information that can help me make sense of what happens in the noise channel, or is it really just a trial-and-error process to make the right kind of sounds with it?

There's a pattern to the note output, actually, after a few notes the pattern repeats itself.

Make an instrument, place the cursor on the noise channel and go to Instrument settings. Move the cursor to C-0 on the keyboard on the bottom of this window, click its top part and move right until you've run through all the keyboard (with this I mean that you must touch the black keys as well). You'll notice there's a pattern that repeats 6 times during the process.

"something-#" is displayed because "something-3" would mean it's in octave 3, and the noise channel only has 16 keys.
