These are all old, and as I tend to be averse to re-submitting music to 8bc just to make minor tweaks, I probably won't take constructive criticism as seriously as I do on a song that's in progress, but I will try to learn from it for future reference. Of course, any compliments are also appreciated. :P

bowsercastle.ftm: The Bowser's Castle music from Yoshi's Safari ([url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNWjb8N_h-s]YouTube). I have been told that 150 is a better tempo than 149 or 151, and had I known that then, I'd've used it. Also, I forgot to transpose the Sawtooth down an octave for frames 03 and 04. I don't think it affects much, but still.

Eternalstar.ftm: The Eternal Star music from Mario Party ([url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9-cZuX3l2g]YouTube). Quite easily one of the most epic tunes from any Mario Party game, and probably the cover of which I am the proudest.

floatcastle.ftm: The Float Castle music from Yoshi's Safari ([url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8hH044K9gs]YouTube). I think it's pretty good, considering that it was made before FamiTracker supported expansion chips.

warioware-fanfare.ftm: I was really bored when I made this. I never plan to publish it, but I thought, why the heck not include it anyhow?

lucy.ftm: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, by some really obscure British band. :P Not exactly my favorite cover, but it's my song on 8bc with the most listens, so maybe it's good after all.

bowsercastle.ftm, Eternalstar.ftm, and floatcastle.ftm were all made using both the original game music and VGmusic.com MIDI's for reference. (I found it much easier to transcribe from the MIDI's and change the notes if they sounded inaccurate to the original song than to transcribe entirely by ear.) warioware-fanfare.ftm was made entirely by ear. lucy.ftm was made entirely from a MIDI, because I'd never actually heard the original song, because I suck.

Well, the tempo thing is probably completely irrelevant for this. The only time I've really noticed where the exact tempo matters is when you set up a delay (e.g., channel 2 copies channel 1 with a delay of two ticks and a much lower volume). FamiTracker gets really fussy about that at times.

Pretty good stuff you got here, BTW. The Eternal Star music sounds familiar somehow, even though I've only played Mario Party once, and it could have been as long as a decade ago...

Sounds like it could have been a tune from Pokemon Red/Blue. I checked to see if they had the same composer, though, and they don't. Hmm.

Anyway, the only problem with it that I can see is I think its DPCM sample sounds very odd... the song sounds just fine if you mute the DPCM channel.

i always liked that yoshi's safari tune. probably my favourite tune in the game.

the danger with using vgmusic midis though is you risk copying other peoples errors. it's better to learn to do it by ear from the original song (with channel muting, if you need it.) i promise, it isn't too hard, especially if you're armed with a wave editor and tempo control as well.

Indeed, it does sound just fine with the DPCM muted. I felt it added a tiny bit of "crash" to the crash, though. Actually, the sample was usurped from another of my original songs; I said "bwush" into a microphone and modified it in a sound editor to turn it into. . . that. Perhaps the sound sample is better in the other song.

I did, in fact, compare the MIDI's to the originals and listen for errors; I found a few of them, in fact, and corrected them in my covers. While I probably do need to improve at covering by ear, I have a really tough time discerning harmonies and chords, and for me, it was much easier to compare a MIDI to the original song and use that as a basis. (Also, I don't think the 64th Note plug-in for WinAmp supports channel muting, so I can't use that helpful technique for N64 tunes. :[ I might have to experiment with wave editing, though. . .)

I think you did just fine, considering that you did the smart thing by comparing more than one source.

I think 64th Note has the ability to mute different channels, but it's been a while since I use WinAmp (since I personally prefer Media Player Classic for its low system overhead).

Anyways, you're one hell of a tracker; but if you're unsatisfied with your crash effect, why not replace your "bwush" DMC with the DMC file in my attachment?

I tried it with a playback frequency setting of 10, but I still haven't found a suitable value for the Zxx effect to set the DPCM channel to.
