I spent hours making about 23 seconds of listenable material...but it felt good to make something.

I've always loved music as an art and it makes me want to make my own, but I've never used any other music production software before and my only music background is a couple of years of piano lessons when I was younger. I saw 8BitDanooct1's mini tutorial on FamiTracker and that really helped me get started. I'm learning how to use some of the note effects and I'm inspired by (and in awe of) all the original work I'm finding on YouTube and on the forum. Seems like a pretty cool community.

Probably where I feel most limited right now is with making instruments. I have no idea what to do or where to start with the instrument settings besides specifying a volume level between 0 and 15. I borrowed the "Crash" and "Hats" instruments from one of FamiTracker's bundled demo tracks.

Comments, tips, or suggestions are great.

Also, this Famicompo competition thing that I discovered sounds awesome. Do they still have it? Is it an annual thing?

Hello and welcome to the Famitracker Forum

As a first attempt, this is really a good starting point. The melody is simple, but makes sense. Maybe try and make it a bit more coherent by using the Triangle channel as a bassline and use the Pulse chanels for melody.
Also, you don't really need the volume settings of the instrument to create a simple volume level with only one step - there is a dedicated colume column. Bare in mind that it is hexadecimal, so it goes from 0 to 15 in a single digit ranging from 0 to F [0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A B C D E F].
You can, however, use the volume setting to create envelopes. Maybe try entering something like "6 6 5 5 4 4 3 3 2 2 1 1 0" for a decaying instrument. Just experiement with different envelopes, I'm sure you'll find useful combinations Also, you can use the volume column and an envelope at the same time - this will result in the volume column "scaling down" the given envelope.
In general, just look at other poeple's FTMs, listen to the individual channels, take a look at the instruments and how they're used and try to learn how to make chiptune work

About the Famicompo Pico: Yeah, the last one was in december of 2014 and I believe it'll happen again - at least I hope so ^^

So yeah, summary: Learn from others, learn with others, and it'll be fine ^^ (as long as you give credit to your sources )

It sounded okay-ish to me but it's nice to hear from someone else that it doesn't sound like complete noise lol. Thanks for the tip about using the channels.

Ah, this clears some things up for me. I have seen other people using the volume column in the way you describe but I didn't know why. I just haven't had a good stretch of time to experiment since I made that first track.

Okay, seeing someone contribute to your project is pretty cool. I like it.
