I just came here to upload some things that I've been working on lately...
I was unsure if I should have posted this stuff at the instrument section, but at least one of these songs are complete, so I created an own thread instead...
Anyway, some feedback would be really appreciated, because I really want the instruments to sound good. You may also comment on something else if you want...
Does anyone know how to get that... "icy sound" which appears in Frost Man theme? Should I use a different wave (Duty / Noise) in a Namco channel, or is it still possible with a Square/Pulse channel? Or maybe it's the volume, but I'm not sure...
And Nintendude8, since you made the 2A03 version of the F-Zero song, do you mind if I upload this MMC5 version to Youtube when it's complete (I still have percussion left)? I won't do that if you don't want that, because the least thing that I want to do is to make someone angry...
You will definitely get credits for it!
Oh, and here you can find the rest of my covers :P

Wow. I'm really loving that Fzero song. Never heard it before. Can you explain to me a little bit about your use of the Fxx function in that song? I opened the file and took that effect out and listened to the song again. I can hear the difference, but I don't fully understand why it happens.
The Fxx effect sets the "speed", it just says how many frames you have to wait before going to the next line... I can't explain it better than that...
And shifting between two different values will create a specific tempo. The main reason for doing this, instead of changing the tempo in song settings, is just that you'll get more... control of the frames.

Since this is my first N163 song, so some feedback would be nice since I'm not sure how to use this sound chip properly.
I know that there's not very much to see in most of the Namco channels. I still have to figure out what I should put there and it hasn't been very easy, because I don't want to ruin the song by adding too much garbage in it, but at the same time, I still don't want to make the song boring and too empty...
But I still hope you'll enjoy the song. I'm very happy how it turned out. Any tips on how to improve this song would be nice...
Oh, I also added the final version of the F-Zero song!
EDIT:
I forgot to tell that there seems to be strange sound when using the release thingy. I don't know how it appears but it helped a little by using a note cut (Sxx effect). Can someone explain to me why it happens?
Remove the effects and listen carefully (use headphones!)

I'll just drop in and mention that you're not allowed to post stuff you don't fully own the rights to (so that means edited FTMs are a no-no). Since nintendude8 doesn't seem to mind I'll let it slide, but you posted this thread without prior confirmation that nintendude8 was okay with it, which is not the proper way to go. Please be more careful next time. Thank you.

Oh, ok...
I'll think about that next time before posting anything. Thanks!

RE: Captain Falcon, Frost Man and Tim FollinPosted: 2013-02-02 16:07
Hello again Mr. Pony(can I refer to you with that name? I have always wanted to.)
Well yeah, I heard all these covers, and let me tell you that I love Frost Man, but it lacks some beat and has some wrong notes here and there. But don't worry, it's nothing strong enough to destroy the song.
So, frosty sound you asked? I may try doing some, but I'm bad with N163 too. However, I guess you know the basics of the chip right? Things like: "Enable as few channels as possible", or "Be careful with wave position". Other than that, your only challenge would be to get the right waves.
I liked your Slap Bass though, but the bass notes are wrong in some places. So look, if I'm able to do something with the song, like getting some waves(frosty ones mostly) or correcting some notes(or even make a new song), I'll pass them to you, allowing you to use them freely but paying the small fee of ONE MILLION DOLLARS(you know I'm joking).
[However, don't expect too much, since I might fail to do all those things, or fail to use the chip properly. To be clear, don't expect anything, because I might do these things as well as I might not.]
Sorry if that sounds too harsh, but I'll do what I can to help you.
PS: You should add Megaman to your signature, since I've seen you like it a lot.
I think the Frost Man cover is pretty nice, but you could have put in those awesome chords in it.
I added some chords from memory. I also tried to make that 'icy' sound at the beginning, but I think I failed.
Tack moviemovies1!
ATM, I'll accept any kind of improvements (or new instruments) since I'm really bad with both 'icy' songs and N163 stuff. Now I have at least something to use and hopefully improve the song even more. Tack så mycket för hjälpen!
@Master
The same goes to you, you have my permission to improve this song, if you want.
Yeah, I really like how to Slap Bass turned out, but it's still not perfect. When you use the release thingy, I'm pretty sure that the wave should look slightly different since I'm not using the triangle wave at that moment (because of the note cut).
Some notes are actually intentional, because I thought it would sound better. However, I did have a lot of problems with the placement though. I mean, seriously, I personally think that a few bass notes in the original song are just... random, don't you think? I tried my best to place these notes in better places, but I have no idea if I succeeded with it. So for me, getting the sound is a little more important than accuracy (especially for a song like Frost Man). But if you manage to make this song sound better (and still keep the song more or less accurate), I will be very happy!

Okay. Look, right now I'm working on another cover of Frost Man, with N163 but 6 channels instead of 4, so my idea was to finish it, post it here(or maybe making a thread to receive some criticism), and let you take from it the most important things that could be added to your cover. It feels empty, specially after listening to the version I am making. I'm actually trying to put in there the most I can catch from the song, since there's practically no way for me to split all the channels.
It has been hard up to now, and yes, the notes seem to be really random, both for bass and percussion. I think we both failed to put them in their exact places. Also, there are notes or sequences that are very hard to recognize.
About the release thing in Slap Bass, you defined 2 waves, and used them one after another, but the release sequence doesn't trigger a new wave, it only fades volume. Maybe that's your problem.
Well, I must congratulate you for almost getting the song, because for me it has been hell. But there's one thing I have to point out:
Frame 0F has almost all notes wrong, mostly in bass. It doesn't set the same mood the original song has. Once I finish my cover you'll see how the bass line should be.
Perhaps later or tomorrow I'll post it here.
PS: Ummmm... so you are going for retro style? Because mine doesn't sound so retro.
Maybe this isn't what you expected, since you might have thought that I was going to modify your song. Instead, I made a brand new cover, but you can still take what you need from it, and give credit if you think it's needed. In fact, you can pretend it's yours, but made by someone else. I grant you almost total domain for this module. Just tell me if you want to upload it somewhere else or something like that.
I still need to point some things out:
First, this is not a 100% accurate cover as I usually try to do, since I couldn't split each channel into separate files. Some percussions and bass notes are a little off, but you can compare that with your cover or even the original song.
Second, as I told you before, I'm still a rookie N163 user, but I did my best to make it sound good.
Third, this is a question: Did I succeed in making that "icy" sound you wanted?
Well, hope this helps you. Good luck with your retro covers. I'll make a new thread for this one.
