Greetings! Well, this isn't the first thing I've made with Famitracker, however, what I have made other than this are mainly doodles and covers to help me get a feel of the program. Tonight, I finally put the finishing touches on what can be considered my first "true" tune and I was wondering what you guys thought. What did I do well, and what can I improve on?

Thank you in advance for listening!

P.S. - I do know that in the future I need to make more complex instruments. I'll start doodling around with that...all in good time!

the melody is ok, but you may work on lead progression.

overall, it's pretty good.

Now that I give it another listen with that in mind, I can definitely see what you mean. I'll certainly work on that! Thank you!

you know all these famous melodies, like Sonic's Green Hill and the Zelda Overworld? It's because they're simple and easy to memorize. that's how your leads have to be - catchy and easy to memorize. and when you add some accompaniment, the song is given justice. after all, you're not trying to make a symphony.

04 and 05 frames. in MMC5's pulse 1, notes often track off the main scale, which makes it a bit painful to listen. you may also work on this.

Needs instruments. Anything without instruments just sounds like Winter Games.

I liked it =] Might also consider manipulating your volume levels here and there so it's not just constantly blaring. Like Dj said, simple catchy melodies are usually the most memorable. Sometimes less is more.

As to the instruments, I'm painfully aware of this. I need to sit down one day and just figure out how to make instruments effectively. Do any of you know any good tutorials? Or is it best to just jump in and experiment, maybe look at some other people's?

I just figured out there was an actual volume channel. Doy.

And, as to lead progression and an overall less is more approach, that sounds to me a lot like the actual first thing I ever made on Famitracker, which I will attach. It was with no expansion chips, 4 or so "instruments" and no use of the DPCM channel at all, but the melody / lead is much more prominent. Let me know if I should take anything from this experiment, if you'd be so kind! Is it more of what you guys are talking about?

There are stickies at the top of the Show off your work section for instruments and short loops. Just go in there and look around for a while. People have tons of stuff in there you can study up on. Experimenting with the instrument editor and just doing random crazy stuff works too.

OK, so I gave it a listen and here is my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed it, sure some parts were over done, some were too loud and some were just annoying, but I like your style, especially the overuse of 1xx and 2xx. The chaos just made me burst out laughing (and that's a compliment from me ;3) I can see you really improving and branching out into this weird acid-tripping funk that just takes your expectations and turns them around upside down and throws them into the family pool. Can't wait to here more!

Also do you have a SoundCloud? I'd like to follow you sir.

(Oh and dreaming of you is really sweet! :3)

Thank you very much! I like to be weird but I think in some parts I was just overdoing it for no good reason, so I'll try to tone it back next time.

Yes! I do have a SoundCloud. I'm QuietForte on there too, I'll just drop by and say hi.
