"That noise" is quite simply low-speed pulse width modulation (PWM).

Yep, and thanks to knowing how it's made I managed to recreate a very nostalgic PC Speaker DOS era sound:

The C64 used it a lot too. I believe the SID had something like 2,048 pulse width settings (comparatively, the VRC6 has a meager 8!).
