Hello there, I was looking to get some tips on volume control in the triangle column. For my early works, I have been using the triangle column primarily for bass, but am unsure how to manipulate the volume of the instruments in it. I've looked on the wiki and such, but couldn't find any answers. If someone had the answers, or tips concerning where to place bass in general, I would be greatful. Thank you.
P.S. Bonus points to anyone who can tell me how to add more columns if possible. (Can you have more than 2 square columns?)
The triangle is typically used for bass, but there's nothing wrong with using a square if you want. The triangle doesn't have volume control. That's just how it was designed.
If you want to use an expansion, go to Module Properties. I don't recommend using an expansion if you're still a beginner though. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the default sound first.
So what you're saying is that I have to adjust all of my sound levels around the Triangle volume setting? That seems like a pain in the ass haha. For instance, I want subtle bass in a certain section of a song, but in order to make the bass subtle, I must bump everything else up?
You can also use DPCM/Zxx commands to make the triangle softer (though this impacts noise as well), for more info see [url=http://famitracker.com/forum/posts.php?id=3005]this topic.

It isn't really that big a deal to adjust the volume around the triangle, but yeah, that is pretty much what you have to do.
I don't recommend messing with the Zxx effect just yet. It does affect the noise volume as well, and tbh, I feel it's easier to just lower the squares a bit than mess with Zxx. It's really not as big a pain as you might think.
Zxx is doable, but it causes a pop because it suddenly shifts the signal level being output by the NES.
underderderground.ftm you can see a "smooth" Zxx slide at frame 3E and 4C. It's slow but effective (though if you muted everything else you'd hear a quiet popping anyway).
goose_trim.ftm I did it another way, by using DPCM samples that automate the Zxx slide; these make a faster slide but turn the pop into a "squeak" sound. I hid the squeak by choosing a DPCM sample pitch that was tuned to a note that was already playing. (note: does not open in beta, use 0.3.7)
Other people have examples around that try to do one-channel echo on the triangle, and stuff like that, try searching the forum for "triangle echo" or something like that.

If you don't want to/can't use Zxx tricks, you can typically make the triangle 'quieter' in a psychological sense by dumping it an octave lower.
You can also make the attack of a note on the triangle channel weaker by making the first frame an octave lower, or similarly making the first X frames a pitch bend that ramps up into the final note.
