Hey there! I just joined this forum today and I thought it would be nice to get some feedback for my first famitracker song that i've made. Like the title says, It's a cover of Momo no Hanabira of Ai Otsuka. I translated all this by ear myself though. It took me about 2 days of work, including jamming on my guitar to get the notes out.
Bumping this. I would really like to get some feedback/critisism on this please as I already started working on my second song and I don't want to do all the same mistakes over again.
There is one thing I did noticed by myself about the instrument i was using. I didn't played enough with the Noise filter and it kinda made all my instruments looking simmilar. That can be tweaked easily but I'll focus on that on the song i'm working on at the moment.
The only criticisms I'd have would be concerning the momentum of the tune, mostly involving the arrangement. I'll see about scrounging up an edit to show you my thoughts on things instead of typing them out here. In depth criticisms via forum text never goes too well :3
Hm...well Youtube wouldn't load when we went to search for the song to compare, but we're liking this cover as whole. We feel more could be accomplished with the noise channel in this, but there's nothing wrong with simplicity. Maybe gyms' edit will help out a bit more than us right now.
We don't know why but we were expecting the triangle to aid with percussion. Guess it's just something we've come to do when VRC6 is in use. Looking forward to second song.

The reason why you can't find the original anywhere on youtube is because Ai Otsuka is under the banner of Avex. And like SONY, Avex usualy clear every songs of their artists (especialy in J-pop) of YouTube. You're best shot is finding a Live performance of the song I think.
As for the simplicity of the rhythm and all, it just happened that I tried to make it as close to the original as possible. I did noticed it had a weird feeling to it too. Probably the best way to approch this would be a rearrangement of the song itself instead of a cover. I'll have to look into it
Yeah, as for the Tri channel I really needed the space there for the bass line though XD, especialy during the chorus the song is nothing without the bass. ^^ I could have played with dpcm i guess to back up the drums a little more, which I did in the song i'm curently working on; Cover of Game of Thrones Opening Theme. I'm expecting to finish it toonight probably!

Yea, I'm referencing [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKT9n_cOwis]this one right now.

I don't think you need a complete song rearrangement, you just need to know how to fill up the frequency spectrum with nes arrangement techniques. One thing that holds your cover back here is a lot of rhythmical cues between the percussion and the bass which propel some sections forward. Like, you missed a diminished bass cue in the chorus and also had the bass playing upbeats in some areas where there should n't be any(it's held back originally to contrast with the next section.)
This why I really respect some avenues of pop music. A lot of people like to hate on the chords and melodies being more simplistic when compared to classical or jazz and their derivatives, but some pop music is so well crafted that if even one rhythm or note or cue is out of place, it throws the entire thing off.
I find it extremely ironic that some chiptune people like to hate on pop. Good pop tune composition is very much working with limitations. A good pop tune works because you have such a comparatively limited amount of composition techniques to use and it sounds great when you've crafted something well.

And unique i should add! with all those limitations it only gets harder to find something that is both good and original at the same time when you create a new song. I totaly agree with you, pop music is too often under rated in most of the more underground music comunities which is truly sad. That's what I like about j-pop especialy, they aren't afraid to mix different style of music, something that I have yet to see in other pop culture so far. Ai otsuka is one of my favorite artist for that reason. Not only she create her own music and sing but her musical style goes from pop, punk, Jazz, funk, classical, electro, rap, hip-hop without realy losing that J-pop sound. Not everyone can achieve something like that and still produce good material even after so many years. That's real talent.
