Hello there. I am new to the forums, and i decided to share with you my famitracker work.
You can download it.
Some of the songs may have weird name labels, Like Konami man 7. it is supposed to be named mega man 7, but i first used konami style notes. now there is capcom style effects
Please share your own opinions!
Have fun listening to all of them!
Well, most of these aren't great, but they're more complete than most of the things I make. Definitely not retard entries, unless you stole them, in which case I'll look like a fool for posting this and will be forced to kill you to preserver my honor. [/endstupidity]
ANYWAYS, here's some (hopefully constructive) criticism:
Bloody Tears has some definite balance issues... and some chord issues. I can hear the correct notes if I strain my ears, but unfortunately that higher melodic part at the beginning makes me want to remove the aforementioned ears. In the future, you may want to make such parts quieter.
I also noticed some instrumentation things I didn't really like in bloodytears_vrc7_remix; Then again, I don't really like VRC7 that much BECAUSE of the sounds it makes, so there might not be a whole lot you can do about it (if you even want to... it IS your arrangement, so go ahead and do whatever the fuck you want)
Your Vampire Killer cover is a good example of too many ideas being used at once because they work individually elsewhere. You also switch your style in EVERY FRAME. I like the multiple-octave part (except for the volume thing, it could be adjusted) in the beginning, but the vibrato and echo aren't necessary, and make it too busy. I like the pitch slide in frame 01 because it gives the track a new feel, but then the noise channel hurts the track because it's either too low a pitch, too loud, or both. Then in frame 02, you drop the harmony (an essential part) and replace it with a neat background flute noise. That flute noise would have been nice if it had been ADDED, but it replaced the melody which made it seem more pointless than it needed to. Then you switch AGAIN, making it sound like "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" for about 5 seconds, and then you add in an effect that kills it. Again. For this piece, I would suggest picking an idea and sticking with it.
I never played Megaman 6, but this piece sounds incredibly familiar. Like, it was in one of the games I DID play. Regardless, this one is pretty good... except for your timing on the vibrato effects, it sounds like a real song. I also like the Triangle Bass.
Konami Man 7 is okay... I can't tell if it's an original or a cover, but it feels empty. I want to take one of the various songs from Tower of Heaven, and copy/paste the harmonics into the middle of the song. I actually know which part too, which makes this particularly aggravating because I can't name it DX
I'm afraid that this will come across as me being a super-critical dickhead (and that's partly because I am a super-critical dickhead - that's why I never post my own stuff X/), but this is actually really good stuff for a first post. Well done.
EDIT: HOLY JESUS! I just realized how long this post is!
What I can tell you is not to try and get into the big stuff like expansion chips. I'm noticing very similar mistakes to my own when I came here with virtually zero musical knowledge. I came here to learn about NES music because I was very passionate about being able to use custom music in my romhacks and understanding Famitracker helped greatly.
You should start with simple things and take your time to make a nearly perfect cover. Just download a .nsf of the song you want to cover (assuming it's a NES tune) , open it in a NSF player (personally I just listen to NSFs with the player in VirtuaNES) and record one of the channels individually with Audacity, or Goldwave. You can disable channels in VirtuaNES with Ctrl + 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.
Listen to the channel recording a few times and try reproducing the same thing in Famitracker. Select small sections of the recording and play them again and again until you get the notes right. There's nothing else really you can do if you want genuine NES covers. (There's another way if you're really helpless but let me not talk about it [no it's not nsfimport])
