First attempt at a cover. I wanted to do more before posting, but I feel like there's so much wrong with it already, and I could use a point in the right direction. The melody just don't seem to have the right sound and I don't know if it has something to do with the length of the notes, speed of the song, or type of instruments i'm using. Any help would be appreciated =] (this is where I was after about an hour and a half....which says alot I know.)
I'm still kinda new to all of this. I have an NSF archive with a bunch of files, and I use NSFplay to listen to them and work out the songs i'm going to cover. How do I import an NSF, and what would that show me?
It will give you all the information you need to make a perfect cover. But for this you need to learn to make instruments based off of what you read from a Blanked instrumented and speed 1 FTM. Here I imported the NSF for you. Study it, and try to make instruments based off of what you read.

Rainwarrior gave me a link to the NSFimporter thingy, so I know how to use that. I just don't understand what to study. Seeing the correct notes at super speed doesn't really help, and even when I slow it down, I'm not sure exactly what I should be looking for. I get a better understanding of the kind of sound I need to make, but I'm not sure how to translate that to an instrument in a much slower song.
each line in your instrument volume column, like:
( 5 5 5 4 4 4 3 3 3 2 2 2 1 1 1 0) equals one column in the imported nsf.
so
9
8
7
6
put (9 8 7 6)
Study the Vxx commands to see which timbre it is using. Your cover doesn't sound accurate because you're using the wrong duty (Vxx) and the wrong volume envelopes. Hope that helps, and good luck!
Find out how many frames each beat lasts, and use that as your speed value. If it seems different for each beat, maybe you need to use Fxx combos.

I record (some) NSFs on hardware. Feel free to request a hardware render.
I must admit I find this one a little tricky to do.
Hey Tadpole? How would you go about finding the right Speed to use, that's the only thing that boggles me.
I'm not sure I understand the question but I'll try to help best I can.
Alright! Let's take a look at the nsf import of mm2wily. Let's count the number of rows per beat. The noise channel will be a good place to look for that. 1st note: Row 001. 1st snare: Row 021. 21-1 = 20 rows/ticks/frames per quarter note.
Now you decide how many rows you want each beat to last. If you want 2 rows per beat, use speed 10 (F0A) 10+10=20. If you want 4 rows per beat, use F05. 5+5+5+5=20 If you want 8 rows per beat, alternate F02 and F03s on each row. 2+3+2+3+2+3+2+3+2+3=20. It's all up to you, but remember, more room between notes, the more room for neat effects. I used to always work in 12 rows per quarter note so you can do triplets easily. Lately, however, I've been tracking completely in t150 speed 01 aka 900bpm.
If any of this is confusing, remember: Always keep the tempo set to 150. That way, each row will last the speed multiplier. For example with F01, each row lasts one tick. F03 = 3 ticks per row.
Wow that's incredible. It's such a subtle difference. So I had the pattern and notes perfect, it was just some slight tweaks of the volume envelops to give the notes a fuller sound. Thanks fezuke for taking the time to modify my instruments, and thank you tadpole for the NSFimport explanation. When I get home from work today i'll try and finish the cover, and post what I get done =]
