I fail to see the 'Hard time' you're having with melodies. This is awesome. Maybe a part with some percussion could be cool. Some kind of build up. I like it.

The relationship between sq1 and tri is solid. There's a lot of nice things going on there, but sq2 seems to be having a hard time.

It seems that you're laying down the outline of the chords with sq2(seems a bit mechanical) while the tri is keeping focus on the root alternating between 1 and 5. The sq1 melody works really well, I'm guessing you internalized that one more than sq2.

I dunno, maybe you can try muting sq1 and give a go at sq2 singing its melody to the tri and see if it works with sq1 afterwards.

edit: had a go at the first four frames for fun

thanks for the feedback, guys!

i really like what you did in cranberry_caper_asdf.ftm, gyms, and i think it sounds a lot better than the original version. i had my own go at it with some revisions to square 2. i hope it sounds a little better than what i had.

@Fezuke: i get what you mean, but i wanted to avoid using the noise channel in this piece. thanks, though

I like it. You did pretty well with what you have. I always find myself using a sound chip. It sounds like it could be something that they might have used back when NES was the newest shnang. Instead of beating the hell out of famitracker to make it epic. You made the slow down in the tempo very clean, and I love how it loops so smoothly.

I sort of agree with Fezuke, but not every song needs perc. You're going for a spooky theme. You don't want some guy smashing holes in his drums.

What I think needs improvement is the triangle. It's just a little too... present, if you know what I mean. If you don't, I mean that there doesn't need to be that much base. And if you do, try some variation in the sound. What you did at frame 02 was great, getting a different sound out of it. Try using a little more effects for the tri. The melody was pretty ok. My only suggestion is at frame 02, you can just use the G effect to add a delay instead of actually making the note come later, just to make it look more sklick and easy to adjust. I liked it, you just asked for my thoughts. Good Job! ; j

thanks for the critique! it's really appreciated.

to be honest, though, i'm not really sure i follow your triangle suggestion. should i make the triangle melodies more prominent? i'm afraid if i do that, it might clutter up the song and make it hard to follow. how could i make it less "present?"

also, i wasn't actually going for something spooky, haha. i tried to make it sound a little whimsical, but i guess i didn't do too good of a job at that :^/

i wrote another piece, this time with the MMC5 expansion. feel free to comment on that one, too, if you wish

Wow, I wish I had such a hard time coming up with melodies as you do! Cranberry caper especially is awesome!

Not they styles I like, but good nonetheless!

There are a few, VERY minor things I would change - a few notes on "cranberry caper" and I would erase some unnecesary notes on "nightlight stroll".

Also... nightlight stroll reminds me of Wario Land 3 =)

And are you having trouble coming up with melodies? The hardest part is the technical one :/ (in which I still suck xD).

there are no unnecessary notes :P
It's one of the many things that provides that wonderful calm/jazzy personality that Kevvviiinnn was going for

The opposite. You need to make it less prominent, or maybe change the pitch time to time.

again, i appreciate all the feedback, guys :^)

@Naff_Natty: thanks!

what i mean is it takes a lot longer to come up with a decent melody when i'm using FT. in FL, i usually don't have too much of a problem with melodies because it's very visual (piano roll), but when i'm working with a tracker, my mind suddenly draws a blank. anyone else have this problem?

@GigaRoid: hmmm, so you're saying i should simplify the triangle melodies so they sit more in the background? sorry for my terrible comprehension skills, if i'm not getting this and if it's not too much trouble, do you think you could upload an edit of one frame of the triangle channel so i can better understand?

i made a little arrangement of "Cranberry Caper". it's a little basic since i didn't really change much from the original. check it out here: [url=https://www.dropbox.com/s/4gs5nc0zmatrld9/Cranberry%20Caper%20(Arrange).mp3]Cranberry Caper (Arrange).mp3

A little bit, and I tell you what helped me - a midi keyboard. I know it's a different type of visual to the one you're talking about, but being able to lay your hands on the notes, and see the relationships between them I find invaluable.
