Hey, guys!

I'm making a new thread for my songs, as the other one got kind of old
=(

I still think my compositions will never be great (good, maybe), but they surely aren't the worst out there (I suppose). Then again, I always tend to criticize myself a lot.

Right now, I'm going to post a Mega Man song I've finished today - my first Mega Man song! =D

There are a lot of flaws in it, but I'm sure you people will notice them right away =)

Oh, and I still refuse to read tutorials or make a single cover - should I change that habit?

Anyways, enjoy! (or "enjoy", in another case).

(Ah, it's time to get discouraged).

You do realize you just made a cover (at least I think so. I mean, you said "Mega Man song" ). Also, you should just watch/read a tutorial or start with really simple rhythms.

Profile pic very related.

You should definitely do tutorials or covers, because what I just listened to was not music.

Not trying to be mean here, just realistic.

Yes; you should change that habit if you want to improve yourself. Otherwise, stay classy.

I know nothing about Mega Man or its soundtracks, but I don't think this is a cover, more like an original mimicking the style of Mega Man. That being said, it's close to being a cover... But not quite since it doesn't involve reproducing concrete musical content (note-for-note reproduction).

Since I don't know what OP means... may I suppose it is directed to me? If that's the case (90% of probabilities), then sorry for being ignorant (?)

And I really appreciate comments that say what I do isn't music. Saying the song is a mess should be enough - I'm far, far away from being talented, so please, don't waste your time making me waste my time reading those kind of things and writing this whole thing up.

If I had good technical skills, my music would be much better - what better way to help me than telling me what I did wrong?

Oh, and I should make covers - I just know my efforts into making them would end up in terrible things (although that's no excuse).

And, for the guy who thinks this is a cover - how could something like this even remotely resemble a great, original song?

OP means original post/poster, so yeah... I don't think it's ignorance as much as self-restraint. It's one thing to dislike making covers, but another to openly refuse to make any just for the sake of it. Being a perfectionist is no excuse, as you pointed out.

Ah, okay. I'll start making covers =) I still don't know why I have such an outstanding ignorance, but... I'll take it. (I would be delighted to know more about me and my ignorance). After all, I post in here to know why I'm bad.

So... expect a new post in a few weeks?

Why are you putting notes at random locations, and then cut frames to make it all fit?

I... just don't get it

Since you've never made covers before, my immediate advice to you, as someone who makes covers 90% of the time, is start with NES-to-NES stuff. Get used to seeing a string of volume values and "translating it" into an instrument; the more you do this, the easier it will become when you don't actually have access to the values in the native format (say, if you're covering a SNES tune), so you can just hear the target volume envelope and easily replicate it in a FT instrument. That way you can concentrate on copying the music itself, replicating styles and techniques that aren't foreign to the system you're writing for (no headache-inducing problems with how to reduce 8 sample tracks into the 5 default NES APU channels, or whatever).

Then, when you feel you've acquired enough experience and developed your own tracking style and techniques (this can take weeks, months or even years; each individual is different), you can move on to more complex stuff: SNES, Amiga, or even PlayStation tunes. Heck, it doesn't even have to be video game music at this stage, you could be making animé themes, movie themes, pop tunes... The sky's the limit! But don't think you'll make a single cover today and wake up tomorrow and be ready for those things yet. These things take time... But in the end it's very much worth it, and don't forget you can apply this style and technique you've developed making covers -to your future originals- as well!

Well, you're the boss when it comes to that... Whatever you feel is within your reach. Anything from Silver Surfer is probably not a good idea to start with for anyone, but simple stuff like stuff from early games when they didn't use complicated envelopes might be a decent choice. Something like Balloon Fight, Mach Rider or Wrecking Crew, perhaps. But you don't have to limit yourself to this, obviously; those are mere examples.
