Here's a little something I worked on the past few days. While I've been playing around with effects and stuff in random FTMs, a lot of them don't fit into my compositional ideas all that well, so this is pretty barren in that regard.
I know some people prefer using a blank instrument and setting the duty cycle through effects, and I personally have started prefering that approach in a lot of situations. However, for this song I felt that saving the duty cycles to instruments was easier to just mess around and change them in large quantities. If I were doing more complex stuff with the volume or other instrument envelope effects, I'd just put them in the channel effects.
Any feedback on how I can improve this or my Famitracker techniques would be greatly appreciated. Almost all of the NSFs I've been studying tend to be pretty sparce on the effects from what I've seen. What I do see is lots of volume and pitch (although it's clear that this is used for vibrato sometimes), as well as delay effects (although without Gxx or Sxx). I think one big area I can improve on is percussion, both compositionally and fitting more stuff in (and learning how to use the DPCM channel besides as volume control for the Triangle and Noise channels).
You've got some pretty nice beats in there, it just seems they don't really fit together. Work on transitions, and that part where only the triangle and noise plays. It's not bad.
Is it that the drums don't match what the other channels are doing, or that the different percussion patterns don't flow well into one another? Or maybe both?
I attempted to follow your advice. I'm not particularly happy with my work on that front, however I did add a lot more to the song in other ways. Added a lot more ideas to the song and set up a loop on the last 10 frames.
I personally like how the song is coming along and hope you all enjoy. If you take a listen, please leave some constructive criticism (and an example I can reference would be much appreciated, too!). Still trying to get my footing with the crazy things you can do in FamiTracker. It seems like every time I learn something, it turns out I've simply discovered the base of a mountain. :P
EDIT: It would help if I pressed Upload instead of just selecting an attachment. I keep finding myself guilty of that...
Wow, thanks! I saw some of the awesome stuff floating around here from Winter Chip VII. If it weren't for all of you guys posting your source files, I'd be so lost. I've been learning a lot about sound design from you guys, and I really appreciate all the help (whether it's just posting your source files on the forums or giving me feedback).
