Hey, new here. I've recently been working on an amateur 2D side-scrolling action game project, using NES restrictions to help my, uh, artistic deficiencies (also because I really like the look of classic NES/FC games like Shatterhand or Batman and the way they dithered with black to create an awesome "gritty" look within the console's palette restrictions.) I figured I should also create a matching soundtrack under a similar set of restrictions, and this is what I have so far (first 4 level themes and unfinished level 5 theme, a boss theme, kinda crappy ending/credits which I will probably replace at some point.) I don't really have any musical training or background, but Famitracker is really awesome and relatively intuitive for me.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate feedback and/or criticism on these. Hopefully they aren't too "programmer music"-ish. Thanks. :)

This is amazingly badass.

When it comes to l4desert, the first level theme of Batman: Return of the Joker instantly popped up into my noggin. Don't know if that was intentional or not, but it was a great nostalgic rush.

But... you KILLED it on lv2plane. Love it.

I can't wait to hear the finished project. Awesome job.

Wow! These are really nice!

Your lead gets drowned out a lot; some tighter volume control wouldn't hurt, but other than that I'm kind of hoping this becomes a regular hobby of yours - you seem to have a knack for it.

Thanks everybody!

Haha, it actually wasn't intentional -- I noticed it too while working on the song, but couldn't think of anything better so I just left it in. The Batman/Batman: Return of the Joker inspiration was probably more in the first stage theme than anywhere else.

I actually have quite a bit of older stuff on this hard drive, so I guess it kind of is already. :D (most of it isn't very good though) Which parts were the lead getting drowned out in? It's probably just because I've heard the songs so many times but I can't really notice it much, except in some parts of levels 2 and 4.

These are all pretty good, the only complaint I have is that the bass is a bit overpowering at times, but other than that it's great!

Huh... weird. I could swear they sounded more muffled last night. Could be I just had my volume too high and the bass just swallowed everything.

The bass does seem a little strong, but I don't think that's an altogether bad thing, either. Just keep doing what you're doing; I think you'll be alright.

Just randomly did a thing yesterday and I think I have a good final level theme now. It feels a bit too short so it might change a bit, but yeah.

I like it. I think it's awesome. I like the sound, Very loud, but still well mixed.

I commented on the others already on IRC, they're great. The new l5base is killer. Simply killer. Very good sense of tension, perfect for last-level adrenaline rush.

And the "orchestral hits" brought a smile upon my face.
