The advice others seem to get from more experienced users seems to be to do a lot of covers of simple (preferably 2A03) songs. Following this advice I covered 3 tracks that I've included below.
A long time ago I also attempted to pick up Famitracker but quickly dropped it shortly after. For completeness' sake I've included 2 tracks I produced back then as well. (as I plan on updating this thread every now and then when I have something new) These are "Final Fantasy 3 - The boundless ocean" and "Irene's song". I've already had some feedback on the first (and help from Tadpole!) and the second one was too advanced for my level of tracking. In particular I'm not happy with the triangle (the sound should be in a square, maybe as arpeggio) and maybe I should have used the sawtooth + triangle for the bass which is now in square 2.
Any tips, hints and (constructive) feedback is appreciated! (even on the older work, but mainly on the new!)
