Ive been using famitrakcer for 6 months registered here a while ago, but never posted anyhitng. anyways, im gonna upload my songs, hopefully get some feedback. I'm aware that i lack musical talent or training. So, these may be more of doodles than actual songs.
I do ahve more but there all pretty much W.I.P.'s.
I quite like foriegn fields and the upgrades (upgrade 4, and, upgrading the upgrade)
I've uploaded a handful of these to the internet. and they got little to no feedback.. o well. (as rendered songs not ftm's)

I don't mean to offend, but these are all pretty much doodles.

I'll be the first to admit I know very little in terms of music theory, but one of the great things about music is that you don't really need to (though it is extremely useful - especially when trying to communicate ideas).

My recommendation would be to try covering some whole songs from start to finish. Cover some NES tunes you're fond of; they'll help you to learn the tracker a little faster than just plain experimentation.

For the record - I don't think any of these are bad, per se (though the timing in come_as_you_is needs work), just very plain and lacking direction. Stick with it; I think you've got the capacity for this.

There are a handful of folks versed in music theory lurking around here. I reckon someone will be around sooner or later to throw some jargon at you.

Pretty decent, but you should fix the instruments, and some notes are just toooo high. Keep it up.

Thanks, Fix the instruments howso? I heard elsewhere that "The squares are a little bit harsh." I know i dont have much control over the duty cycle with regular 2a03/2a07 instruments.. but I heard adding a little pitch fluctuation makes them sound softer, didnt really appear that way to me..
Anyways, Ill attempt a cover of SOMEHTING. I really wanna do Song of storms, bit thats not from the NES. Ill attempt umm.. well ill htink of something..
thanks again for the feedback.

No, no! Do something away from the NES if it's easy enough...Song Of Storms is simple.

Ok, then ill try that. just wondering also, is using an NSF and famitracker a better way to figure out a song? (than sheet music or DIY style?)

covering songs that were done for the nes is a very good exercise for someone starting out. depending on what your influences are, you learn not only theory through observation, but you learn how experts of the system were able to take reign of the chip and optimize it to sound as good as possible. i would recommend starting out simple, even something like tetris or mario 1, and building yourself up to being able to replicate and understand something like the works of the follin brothers, konami, or even sunsoft. learning the tricks and techniques that these companies and artists used on the system is absolutely crucial when it comes to creating your own arrangements of songs that are alien to the system, without any prior knowledge of how to program sound on the nes it is almost definite that your arrangement will turn out sounding very bland, or unpleasant to the ear. that's not to say that you aren't allowed to come up with your own style and discover the limits of the system yourself, but i would like to assume almost anyone who is an experienced nes sound designer or composer will tell you it is incredibly beneficial to learn through observation and apply the techniques you have studied and replicated to your own arrangements of other music, or even later on your own original musical compositions on the system if that's where your interests lead you.

NSFs will always be the most accurate. If you're going for something non-NES, you're probably better off doing it yourself.

I swear every time I try to find a decent transcription of something all I ever find is garbage. It's almost as if no one has ears. :P

Still, it might be good to find some sheet music or a MIDI as a reference anyway. You can always change things if you think the transcription is wrong.

hahaha, tell me about it. whenever i'm feeling lazy or want something to refer to on a part i can't pick out myself, the midis i find usually end up being so off-key, they hurt.

The ones I find usually have a random drumbeat that isn't even better than the original one, and a few (hundred) notes and beats off by so much I feel like smashing the transcriber.

If you're going to do something, do it right. Too many people are completely incapable of being critical of their own work, and that's what I think bothers me about it most. If your ears are in serious need of training, be honest with yourself instead of posting a waste-of-time rendition. I had the exact same problem with guitar tabs... A LOT!

Derail aversion! I still stand by my previous suggestion - even if you find a bad transcription, it can still be helpful. Comparing it with the original work and picking out/correcting what's wrong is still good training for your ears, and well-trained ears are crucial if you want to do anything musical that's worth a damn, including FamiTracker.
