So as my first cover of 2012, I decided to do Bit Shifter's "Reformat the Planet". It was (and is) going well... Too well, in fact. the main problem I'm having is volume control. I'm trying to keep the FDS channel in a GameBoy-like state, and building the rest of the song around it (The squares and noise have adjustable volumes... the wave does NOT).

I know some things are slightly off, but what I'm really looking for are volume approximations. I just decided to do this before I get too far.

Something to note is that LSDJ allows one to build a wave instrument that is actually 10 waves, stitched together to sound like an actual instrument. It lets you fake the wave channel into having real volume control. In other words, don't worry about it.

Cover sounds great, by the way!

I'm not sure I should spoil it just yet, but the Namco 163 (in the upcoming beta) has a similar feature in its instrument editor, where you can define up to 16 waves within one instrument, and use the "wave" envelope type (or Vxx) to quickly cycle through them, just like you would with any square's duty cycle.

I wonder if the same feature could be implemented in the FDS instrument editor.

Well, at the moment you can already do this with a pile of instruments, and you'll see that it makes a pop every time you switch waves. The FDS unit has to be halted for a significant amount of time while it reloads the waveform.

I'm not really familiar with the Game Boy though, but I do know it has a lot less data to push, and could probably change the wave much faster.

The wave channel does have volume control... it's just that it only goes (if I remember correctly) 0-2.

Nice cover though.

As far as I'm aware, the Game Boy is able to change waves with little to no delay/audio popping. I've found some GB soundtracks where the waves do alot of popping without the waves changing. I haven't researched it but I think THAT sort of audio popping might be related to SID conversion (although I'll admit that's mainly speculation on my part). It's difficult to say though because the GB squares seem to suffer from constant audio popping too.

I've used it... and it's a long and tedious process (SELECT + B THEN SELECT + A = Copy and paste for those of you at home)
...it only goes (if I remember correctly) 0-2.
So close!!! It's actually 0-3, and each level distorts the wave slightly, which is why I use the above method.... though some waves are harder to shrink than others.

Thanks for the kind words, I guess I'll just keep doing what I'm doing.

EDIT: I just realised that I've been using Famitracker for a year today!!! HOW FITTING!

Fitting indeed.

Remind me to do my first cover this year on my two year mark.

EDIT: Oops, look like you forgot that a year is 365.25 days long. Oh well.

Heh, I've been using FamiTracker since 2006, but you wouldn't be able to tell that from my forum membership.

Just a few nitpicks:

Frames 01 and 02 of Square 2 feel a bit too loud. Also, frame 03 of FDS feels a bit too quiet.

The last frame of the song (27, the last one with notes) should have harmonies in it. B-3 is playing at the same time.

Frames 11 and 12 of Square 2 should octave-arp, maybe hold the original note and jump up after a few ticks? That's what it sounds like to me.

Overall, though, awesome work.

Aside: I think I've been using FamiTracker for a year, three months? Four months? I've lost the creation date of the first thing I made (stupid Dropbox). My first YouTube video was in November 2010, but that was when I got my desktop set up. I'm pretty sure I got started a month or two before then.
