Heya. I'm new. I've been working on a couple songs (aside from the first one, they aren't done) and I've been looking for some commentary or tips on what I could do better.
I'd originally meant for this to be a kind of game soundtrack, but I'm not entirely sure how well these fit together (not that there's much song to go on aside from the first and last ones).
Anyway, I don't really have much else to say, so here you go.
But you have some great chord work going here. Lower the volume a lot and give each instrument a unique sound/duty cycle that's not the default and you'll have a solid track.
Where are the volume envelopes? Or volume control in general? Or duty cycles that aren't 0?
I have no idea what "volume envelopes" means exactly, but I do admit I didn't put any work into varying my volumes or instruments, mainly because I really have no idea where to start when it comes to this kind of thing, which is part of why I came here for advice.
I'm really glad that you guys are liking what I've got so far, though! I've never tried using more than two or three instruments before this, so I was a bit worried about how it would turn out.
something a bit like this- note I only edited the instrument volumes/timbres and didn't add commands- you could make it sound prettier even with commands
Oh, wow, I did not think hearing such a simple tweak would make understanding what you mean that much easier. Thanks!
Oh, and after doing a bit of lurking I came across something about the Fxx effect. The question I have now is how important is it to use alternating speeds instead of tempo, and how do I calculate what the "pattern" is?
Okay, so I tried tinkering with the instruments a bit as well as the volume effects, and accidentally started working on a completely new song instead of continuing one of my unfinished ones (hooray for ADHD?)
For the first song, there doesn't seem to be enough of a melody to it. I can hear that the intro is repeated later on in the song, and that's good, but the rest of the song isn't much to listen to.
The extra channel chords also clash with the tune, rather than compliment it.
Then after you get past the intro portion of the song, everything just clashes, and sounds like too many channels were included for the sake of having extra channels. Simplify this stuff, get rid of that dissonance. The melody that this point in the song isn't that great either.
For the second song, the first part is okay, but the loop is horrible. Lots of clashing from the extra channels here.
Third song just sounds like filling the channels with notes, not much of a song here. If you want to try to rescue this one, ditch square 2, and VRC6 square 1, then change many of the notes in VRC6 square 2 so they aren't dissonant.
Fourth song is good. Keeping it simple and to the point, it sounds like real music. Sounds good until the extra channels come in, they are way too loud here. The parts where the notes just keep on playing the same thing sounds like a mistake, not like a stylistic choice, I'd add a note to the beginning of those frames so it's not just stuck on the previous note.
Fifth song, first half is too grid-aligned. There's no rhythm here at all, just sticking to the grid. And if the intended effect is some kind of echo-fade by repeating the notes, the volume change doesn't go low enough for that to work. There's no melody here either, it's just filling the sheet with notes.
As for the fifth song second half, it just needs to go somewhere. This has some potential to do something, but there's nothing here.
Sorry to sound really really negative here.
Considering this is exactly why I'm here, there's no need to apologize. In fact, I was expecting more "this part needs to be redone entirely," hence sending unfinished stuff.
Okay, so I've tried to fix the problems Dwedit brought up, and I'm not too sure how well I managed in that respect.
For the first song, I've tried redoing the parts for the extra two channels, but since I didn't notice the dissonance the first time, I'm not sure how well I fared this time.
For the second song, I've also redone the extra channels' parts somewhat, but I'm not entirely content, and I have no idea where to start when it comes to making it sound better.
Third song I didn't even bother saving - I didn't like it in the first place.
Dude's song... I... think I fixed what was mentioned? The volume seems bipolar to me for some reason - either too quiet or too loud, and I couldn't really figure a way to get the parts where the notes keep playing to sound much different
As for the fifth song, I didn't spend too much adding to the second part, 'cause I'm still not sure if the first part sounds good enough yet.
